b0b, Marty made a point about my using the a*****e word, and I will admit that I used it and was not called down for it. I've seen others use it as well. However, I will abide by forum rules and refrain from profanity from now on.

I will also say that, to my knowledge, I've never used the word aggressively; i.e., I don't recall ever calling anyone that word online here, other than to say, "no, you're NOT an ------," or using the word in a detached manner rather than identifying someone I'm speaking to as such. But if I have, I do apologize, if not to the person themselves, at least to the rest of the Forum for my aggressive tone.

Additionally b0b, you made an excellent point about what some people find humorous that others may not find humorous, and in fact, offensive. Humor works best and is most widely amusing when the speaker makes himself the butt of the joke, a la Dangerfield, et al. The rule of thumb for me always has been that you give someone as much "good natured grief" as you know them; if you know them very, very well, you can safely chide them (but even that has it's limits when done publicly). If you don't know them at all, you treat them with the utmost civility.

Finally, my personal feeling is that to say Carl Dixon's signatures regarding his Christian belief is as offensive as singling out individual forumites for attack is highly disengenuous. Perhaps an atheist would be offended that a Christian would pray for them, but the act of prayer is definitely not as offensive as a personal public humiliation or a slap in the face.

All the preceding is IMHO, of course. Please accept my apology if my use of dubious slang has offended anyone or compromised the rules of the Forum.

You know, it's weird how, after all the rage, the inflammatory comments about everything and everybody(except LLoyd Green),the downright insulting posts that Marty Pollard has put up, he finally gets the boot for comments made after he posted his music(or hung out his dirty wash, depending on what you thought of the tune).
I've gotten into such high-toned Forum brawls with Pollard, insulting each other's character, intelligence, personality---everything but calling Mama bad names--that some of you guys e-mailed me, reminding me that I'm supposed to be a Christian.
I've only seen a couple of Marty's posts that were not mean-spirited---things like wishing our buddy Brett Day a happy birthday over on the other Forum. How many of the rest of us did that? Marty's a Forum jerk, but I understand he's a pretty decent guy in person. So maybe there's a lesson in this for us all.
Maybe Luke the Drifter said it best-"So unless you have made, no mistakes in your life, Be careful of stones that you throw."
BTW, about those Christian e-mails---y'all pray for me--I need the prayer, and y'all need the practice! God bless!!

OK, it's my turn now...
I see this forum as a kind of meeting place, let's say a virtual bar.
If someone is constantly rude in his behaviour, as a kind of humor he only shares with himself, he will be warned, ignored, making others angry and maybe kicked out by the bartender.
Because I was fed up with this guy, watching how he was offending others and their playing, I gave my reply, and from then on I was the one he tried to pick on. I ignored him after that, so he went to others.
Bartender took his responsibillity to protect his furniture and his clients, I guess.
Sad, hope it will turn in a good way.

It takes "all" kinds to make the world go 'round. IMHO the forum was a better place yesterday than it is today. Image

Herb,
I have always found your posts, as well as those from b0b and Buddy E. to have been the model for the manner in which we should use this forum. Gentlemanly, tactful, without ridicule, very informative. No apologies needed. And thanks b0b, for the forum.

A pretty song - and I think your tone is good, so I´m a bit puzzled that some big guys say it needs changing. But I can´t claim to be a musician, just an average listener with a music taste made in Sweden.
I wanna hear more from you!

I think I understand where you're coming from, but really, do you actually think that all this would have taken place if Marty had simply followed b0b's repeated requests to be civil, stop turning the disagreement over issues into personal attacks using profanity, and saying things that offended and intimidated other forumites?

He refused to do so, and so he was escorted to the door, so to speak. If someone was in your shop and, though he might be an intelligent man and a fine player, by his actions caused other customers to complain to you and choose to leave Steel Guitar Nashville rather than put up with the irritation and intimidation, would you put up with it or would you ask the offender to leave. I believe you'd do what is best for your business. b0b is no different.

I go over and look at your forum, my man. I see what some of the disaffected former SGForumites write over there. I know you've got little control over what topics get started, but even you must admit there's precious little useful information going down about steel guitar unless you yourself start a thread. Oh, there's some topics of interest and content happening from a few serious steel players, but mostly... lately at least... what few posts coming online have a been a bitch-fest about this forum, b0b as a person and picker, Tommy White buying or not buying a steel guitar, "Steelin10" going on and on about "Boobe-this" and "Boobe-that," etc. Brother, it doesn't take a whole lot of time to go through the stuff, trust me. Image Unless of course I'm trying to decipher what it is Steelin10 (BC) is actually saying. Image

Freedom of Speech is the right to say whatever you like, with incredibly broad latitude but not limitless, without the GOVERNMENT coming in and imposing censorship. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with individuals who own and operate a business, organization, or website being obligated to give someone a platform to say things that might be detrimental to that business, or be uncivil.

Contained in the First Amendment is also Freedom of the Press, which extends to those who own the printing presses. This forum is b0b's digital printing press. He can allow or disallow whatever he wants. It's his right. Your forum is the "alternative" press to b0b's. I have a feeling that b0b would discourage or stop, if they occurred on this forum, attacks on you that took the nature of the attacks on him that persist on your forum. But the nature of your forum is yours to choose, and that is your right as the moderator. Obviously there's a need for a "no-holds-barred" forum, but b0b doesn't want that place to be here.

Daymon Lapoint is another fellow that I understand b0b felt the need to "show to the door." Heck, he (Daymon) might have even requested it... I don't remember. From reading his posts on your forum, I believe he also fails to grasp the concept of controlling one's emotions and speech without repercussions, and is quite bitter over it. I bear both these fellows, and those that agree with them, no ill will. They could be excellent musicians and intelligent men with a lot to contribute... and I know Marty is quite bright and musically talented..., but there's a very contentious or argumentative side to these guys that comes out in ways that don't do their other potential gifts to our community any justice.

And that is the regretful part of the whole affair, IMO.
