Anybody playing in Sacramento Aug 8-9

Post by Ronald Heinzel »

If got to spend a few days in Sacramento next week so I'm wondering if there's anyone playing. I'll be just killing time in the evenings so I'll be out and about.

I treated myself to another Sunday afternoon at Red Hawk Casino today, this time to see Paul Sutherland play in his band “Locked And Loaded”. This band puts on a quality show with a good mix of classic and contemporary country tunes. Solid rhythm section, good vocals with occasional 3-part harmonies, and plenty of guitar and steel showcasing. Paul played an extended solo on “The Dance” that should have been on Garth Brooks’ recording of it...a real jaw dropper! I also got a detailed up close lesson on palm-blocking and playing behind the vocal on a georgeous sounding Emmons D10. He is, as his band mate quipped between songs, a “world class” pedal steel player.

Paul, it was great to hear you play and meet you in person, even though our chat was hijacked by a special fan and admirer.. I hope you had a spare thumb pick :D

Well, there may be a shortage of gigs out there for them but it seems there is no real shortage of excellent country bands and some GREAT pedal steel players in this part of California. It has been an enjoyable and educational experience so far. I am very grateful to everyone who has responded to this thread, and hope to meet all of you somewhere down the road.

Thanks for the kind words Fred. I've been trying for several years to get the band leader to tone it down a bit. Hope to see you and Vivian again soon. Maybe we can finish our conversation.

Thanks Paul. It would be nice to keep this as an ongoing thread.

If anybody finds themselves lost in the High Sierra next weekend, I’m playing with The Bill Welles Band on Saturday at the 12th annual Hermitfest at Hermit Valley Campground on Highway 4. The link is almost as long as the road there...

That’s a different batch of hermits, b0b. Possibly a little better organized than the ones I’ll be with.

Hi Fred, it was great seeing you again up in Arnold.... giving your thread a bump by announcing my band will be performing at the "Gold Country Fair", in Auburn, CA.... Tomorrow from 4:00 through 6:00pm.

I understand we will be on the "Fiesta" stage.... sounds like fun to me :)

Hi all. New here and to lap steel. I'm from Turlock and hope to see some of you at some point. My band, Sonhouse Blues and Gospel Band plays the area frequently - but no lap steel - yet.

Since this topic is frequented by folks in my area, I was wondering if there were any good teachers in the Modesto area. I will be focusing my playing on "dirty blues." probably interested in just an occasional sit-in so someone can help me stay on the right track, make sure I'm not developing bad habits, give me a good challenge to work on, etc.

Thanks!

Darren, Forum member Richard Sinkler is in Oakdale, and Ron Wright is in the Modesto area. They are both very accomplished players and might know someone who can get you started. Richard posted on this thread, so he’s easy to contact. Search the Members Section for Ron and send him a note.

I'll be playing with a couple bands this Saturday at the inaugural Grass Roots Music Festival in Grass Valley, CA

https://www.grassrootsmusicfestival.org/

Pretty great lineup if you're into independent country artists.
