Regarding Charlie Rich torching John Denver.

It was disgraceful. Charlie Rich was so loaded he could hardly stand up. I don't think Denver was a country singer either, but he made a lot of people happy with his music and he did nothing to Rich or anyone else to earn the scorn that he was subjected to on that night. (And he kept a steel player employed for a while too.)

As for Leanne Rimes, remember, she's a kid. Give her a few more years to grow up. Lets hope she does better than some of our 'heros'...drunk and dead before 30.

It was a disgrace that John Denver was even mention on a country music award show, much less winning. What does making people happy have to do with a country award show? A country award show should be about country music not a rocky mountain hippie.

Sorry if I seem angry. I just had to set thru 15 mins of top 40 country radio.

I love what Nashville used to produce, but Rocky Mountain hippies, Texas Outlaws, Australian divas and Missouri tourism promoters have picked through Nashville's lunch pretty well.

There seems to me to be an arm wrestling match. Who needs who? Does Faith Hill, Dixie Chicks, McGraw, etc, need the Opry or (Oh..Oh!) does the Opry need them?

You and I might sit through a whole Opry performance, but I know of younger people who went there and listened...got bored and walked out at half time. These are kids who come from all over the country to go to Vanderbilt. The ones I know told me exactly that...they went to the Opry once out of curiosity; the Opry had their chance to spark an interest in these young folks and couldn't close the deal.

One more regarding John Denver. I don't know where you hung out in your younger days, but I can't imagine anyplace more country than the old Zanzabar here in Aurora. Ronnie Miller on steel and Ray Cobb as lead singer. Back in the 70's Ray sang a bunch of Denver songs in his sets along with all the Ray Price and Paycheck stuff.

David,I haven't thought of the old Zanzabar in years,went there every time I was in denver,1966-72.Seems I was drug down the street to a club called,I think Fridays and Saturdays also a place way out on Kolfax was it the Westerner? Good old days good music except for Fridays and Saturdays.

Fridays and Saturdays was a respectable nightclub (not really country) that went downhill fast in the middle 70's and became a sleazy strip joint (as opposed to a classy strip joint?)...The club you are trying to think of further out on Colfax was the old Four Seasons. They rotated country bands through and had some good ones. They burned down years ago.

Further east on Colfax is the Frontier, which is still, today, a Fri/Sat country bar and has good bands. Pretty civilized with mostly older folks drinking just a bit too much and listening to country. It safe to go out and listen if you don't mind the smoke in your clothes.

The Zanzabar was a great one and I hated to see it go. Last time I was there (late 70's), Rusty Young's brother was playing steel. I think his name is Ronnie and I think he is still around town playing R & R. [This message was edited by David Weaver on 16 May 2001 at 11:11 AM.]
