My wife and I were privileged to attend the Friday night Opry. I have to agree with Teresa, you have to be there to get the full effect of the Grand Ole Opry. What you see on TV doesn't do it justice. In fact, I think that Eddie Stubbs said it best shortly before the Opry started. He said "Remember, the Opry is not a place or a music theater, it is a live radio show. Regardless of the negative posts on the forum, the Spirit of the Grand Ole Opry appears to be alive and well. It was great to be there and see Tommy White play in person. There were many other great steelers there as well. Unfortunately, I can't put names with all of them yet. The steel guitar was up-front and very prevalent in almost all of the songs. I was thrilled that I got to see Kayton Roberts play for Billy Walker. Porter Wagonner made a point of recognizing Kayton. I am looking forward to returning again, and would love to be able to attend it again in the Ryman. I went to the Opry at the Ryman a couple of years before it moved to the present Opry house. That was an experience I will treasure.

Theresa,
You are obviously "in" on all the happenings and inner workings of the Opry, TNN, and now CMT. Can you explain why there are so many commercials, which as you quite correctly state, "sponsor this music", in the one hour CMT show, and no more music in their one hour show than there was in the half hour show when it was on TNN?

Bobby, what you missed were 2 songs by Jim Ed at the end of the 1st half hour, and also a song by Jan Howard and maybe more. I think Jack Green sang 2 songs on stage.

I have to clarify some things I said before about the Opry being crap. It's not the Opry itself. It is the way CMT is producing the tv portion now that is upsetting. I still want to see and hear Tommy, Hoot and all the other musicians perform. I've been to the Opry several times and I know it only takes a few minutes between acts. And I know we are missing alot of good music during the silly interviews and commmercials. If it costs so much to produce the show on tv why even bother to show it. I'll just quit watching it and listen to WSM radios' broadcast. At least I'll be able to hear what's going on. And I won't have to watch some ditzy blond who probably doesn't know a pedal steel guitar from from a tuba. LH

Theresa, you are WRONG!!!!!! What you see from backstage might be the same from week to week but it certainly isn't what you see on the TV screen. The TNN format was much better than the current format.

When it was on TNN, the commercials were short and you got the impression that they actually rushed to get you back to the stage where the performance was in progress. I'm sure it doesn't take 5 minutes to set up an act on the Opry.

They are cutting out songs to promote artists and CD via the backstage interviews. To me that's just advertising as usual. I wonder what the record companies are paying for those interviews. I bet it's a lot more than Tommy makes for his appearance!

Well said b0b. I know on one occasion Saturday night I could hear someone singing on stage while one of the interviews was taking place so if that's the case, there has to be more that we are not seeing. As far as taking time to set up, why would it take any more time to set up now than it did when TNN was doing the broadcast? I thought they only had like one minute to set up bands.

Jim Ed's steeler is Darrell Hornburger, and one heck of a nice guy, as is the rest of his band, and Christie. (Darrell's wife)

Well, we all know there's more to the Opry than what we're seeing on CMT. (By the way, Theresa--do you own CMT?) I remember specifically being able to hear from the Opry stage a band instrumental (probably for the clogging groups) behind one of the interviews. I know that CMT targets people my age (I'm 26), and I guess they don't think we as viewers should be forced to go through such punishment. Well if COUNTRY music is punishment, what the heck are they doing showing it?!? Give us the real deal, I say. Give us Jeannie Sealy, Jack Green, give us whoever--just give us the entire segment!! When you attend or listen on the radio, you hear commercials, but they don't take half an hour. And for the love of Pete, give us back our Opry announcers, Keith Bilbrey (and I'll think of the other regular when I'm through typing this, I'm sure). This Trent Summer clown made my butt want a dip of snuff. Cindy Thomson was cute as a button, and showed more talent than I'd given here credit for (still not country, but at least it was music; take a lesson there, Trent, old boy.) Well, I've ranted and raved enough about CMT. They think everyone my age is all about bubble-gum pop and belly-buttons. I won't even start in on The Nothing Network. Sorry ship-jumpers.
