Wow, it's beat the Hell out of the C.M.A. again. And I must say-----every negative response is earned. I lasted 45 minutes before I "RAN" from the T.V. My wife and I leave Canada every winter for the trip to Yuma. Heading down I-5 is like listening to a teen age juke box as one station fades out and another comes in. It's really tough to find a good "Country Station" so I just carry lots of my "kinda stuff". Emmons, Hughey, etc etc. calm the traffic better than what I heard last night.

I watched the first hour and I couldn't take anymore. I seen a couple of steels on stage, but I didn't hear any. I think two things have spelled the doom to real country music. Ricky Skaggs voiced one in an interview once when he asked,(what are we selling here? music or sex?). Another is the promotion of line dancing. That is about the only clubs left in Indianapolis, and I suspect a lot of places. They require the beat and the songs that are being put out, not for listening pleasure, but for their (dancibility). In the old days, we played real country music to listen to, and in between we played songs like (Johnny B. Goode, Memphis, and High Heel Sneakers for fast dancing. Customers would dance the slow dances and the fast ones, but not anything else in this part of the country. I traveled to Texas a couple of times to see my Daughter and they danced to shuffles in Texas, but they didn't know how around the midwest. All of this combined with the drunk driving laws have almost wiped out all the country music around here. The police never seem to bother the drunks leaving all the ballgames and sporting events however. It looks like someone will have to figure out how to play country music at the sporting events to ever bring it back.

Oh well. I may as well start my Christmas wish list: Merle Haggard, Gene Watson, Dale Watson...
All of them have recent releases.
I still like a lot of what Sara Evans does. She's a great singer. I wish she'd have won more than just the video award, but nice to see her getting recognition and nominations. She needs to record "You Take Me for Granted".

" School Bus Driver, in a traffic jam"
When I was writing tunes and submitting them to a few producers I knew very well back in the 70's, if I ever showed up with a lyric like this my invitiation to stop by and visit as often as I like would have been
re-voked.
Cable TV and cross over financial gain has taken the Country out of Country Music. I ahve said this once before, when a producer substitues a synth for the steel part on a cross-over version of 'The Big Tune " the artist has totally sold out for the fame and fortune.
BUT, I still have hope that it will reverse, It will take some major star to dictate that
the crossover version of a tune stays intact, with the Steel and fiddles..There's only a very few with that kind of power, and I ain't one of them !!
Like the song says, Only in America

Where did it all go wrong? IMHO, when MTV changed the industry with the music video format, so that now only the beautiful people get promoted. And they are not necessarily the most talented. If Patsy Cline walked into a Music row studio today, they'd take one look at her and say, "You're no Faith Hill; sorry..." without even listening.

The problem isn't Country Music<<<. Its these "Washed Up" EX Rock and Roll producers that can't make a living in LA or NY anymore invading Nashville. The real country is there still there and some of the artists want to do it, but until the major record labels finally wise up and get rid of these "Bubblegum Junk" producers we won't hear any REAL Country. The stuff that is being made in Austin, Tx. Is great though
and a final note, you and I are not who counts to the major lables, its the all mighty DOLLAR and that is the Teeny Boppers buying this junk that Toby Keith is putting out. YUCK<<<<<<.

Wow, I can't believe it. I just counted 33 different posters in this thread...and not a single one was positive! (Not even Bobby Lee!) I must admit...that makes me feel good.
If Nashville is trying to appeal to everybody, they sure are missing the mark in our demographic, aren't they?
I wonder if they care?
I wonder if they know?
(I bet they do now!)

Jim, you are only touching the surface with citing the Alan Jackson CD. If you really get into the trade mags you'll see who consistently has appeared on the most #1 songs/albums over the years.
But you have to have "PR" in order to really be considered. People, such as Paul, just go about doing their "job" and don't get in the news. If you went to the DJ's, etc that are the voting CMA members I doubt if more than 10 or 15% know who the session musicians are on the CD's.
I mention the steel because it does not get the CMA award recognition it should. I mention Paul because he is currently the #1 session steel guitarist (and has been for many years). But, there have been other name steelers that were the #1 (or one of the top session steelers) and they too were snubbed, e.g. Lloyd Green, Hal Rugg, Weldon Myrick, Sonny Garrish, Buddy Emmons and many more.
