..there was a fever goin' round, Papa caught it and he died last spring....
NOTE: This is where the timeline gets a little fuzzy...the narrator is telling the story sometime after the 3rd of June, which is in the spring. The news arrived on June 3rd, and Papa was definately there to comment on it on June 3rd. A year has come and gone since they heard the news, so it's now after June 3rd in the following year, yet Papa caught a fever and died last spring. I can only deduce that Papa must have caught the fever and died in the time period between June 3rd and June 21st last year (still springtime), right after they heard the news about Billy Joe.

Of course, it could be argued that a year (approximately) has come and gone, and it may well now be July, or even August. In which case "last spring" could be considered as being the earlier part of the year in which the song is being sung, for example March or April following the sad June in which Billy Joe met his unfortunate demise (although I'm not sure the body was ever found? maybe he jumped off the bridge and swam to the Gulf of Mexico?).
I did consider using a variation of the "tab" feature to draw up a timeline of these events... but...
me, I never seem to do much of anything...

...that's possible Nick, but it depends on the colloquial use in the vicinity of the Tallahatchie bridge...for example, up here if it was August, we would refer to the March/April/May/June preceding as "this spring" or "this past spring", we would not refer to it as "last spring". Furthermore, if the narrator is relating the story in July or August of the year following Billy Joe's "mysterious disappearance", it would actually be more than a year that's come and gone since we heard the news about Billy Joe, and wouldn't fit in with the inferred anniversary reminisce of sad events gone by....
...but what do I know..me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge...
