Also, sometimes playing with real musicians is like playing when you are drunk or stoned. It doesn't always sound better, but it feels better. People who have taped themselves while under the influence and listened to it the next day or week will know what I mean.(grin)

IMHO
Opera houses, band shells, symphony halls, cathedrals, and the like existed before recordings, and they exist today. Therefore music is social for the players and the audience.
The amount of solitary practice and playing, to be competent in a choir, orchestra, or band probably has not changed.
