<SMALL>Carl Smith, stand up and take a bow..."</SMALL>
and swat someone with it.

Chris, your participation is appreciated, and it strikes me as more useful than wildly uninformed speculation. Hope the shouting doesn't skeer you off.

You know, Carl Smith did voluntarily retire from the music business. He indicated on <u>Nashville Now</u> his desire to be Carl the family man and Carl the rancher as opposed to Carl the public persona. Award show reticence would seem consistent with his shunning of the limelight.

I like Carl Smith better than any half dozen NCSers put together. I have video of Hal Rugg backing him on "There She Goes" circa 1973--complete with burgundy polyester and collars the size of Long Island. There's more country in those three minutes than in two hours of contemporary CMAvaganzas.

Carl was there to make an acceptance speech. Why else would he show up?

Folks, we should just be glad we get to see or hear anything about our beloved heroes and legends on CMT. They pi$$ me off every time they have a "greatest" show on anything because a lot of truly deserving folks never get mentioned or don't "place" high enough. Remember, Ray Price was not even mentioned in the "40 Greatest Men Of Country" show. Sacrilage! Image What can we expect though...CMT is owned by MTV Networks. Why do you think Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock and others are now being played on there? I could go on and on, but I'll hush now Image.
