Well buddy John..If my next meal depended on me playing with my NC Neighbor Goober pal.. Image then I am surely going to have to admit that I am in the wrong business and my attempt at making it in music has surely failed..

Should I work for tips on Broadway with Goober..and starve ? or should I just submit and get a job at Home Depot..and get to wear an orange Hat.. I vote for Home Depot and the Orange Hat..and daily food..

Oh..and save me a bag of Peanuts would ya ?

It would surprise me if Goober won, that's what TV's about, the lowest commone denominator. What I don't understand is, if Matt has got some talent in comedy, he should have a platform to display it. Minny Pearl wasn't a great singer, but she won the hearts of millions. I don't think that the song format allows enough latitude for guys like him to show his potential talent, if any.

I'll have your bag of peanuts waiting at Saluda on May 15th, Hope to see you there.

John

Can't you do any thing with those red hat goobers over that way? Image We don't have problems like that in Eastern NC.
[This message was edited by John Floyd on 21 April 2004 at 03:47 PM.]

Hey guys...I can't tell all of you how much I appreciate all the comments, votes, and general good wishes conveyed to Jennifer on this forum..as some of you noted, she is well on her way to a career in music because of the exposure she gained on the show,,,,we had a little jam in her honor here in Nashville (THANK YOU DAVID SPIRES) and she is truly happy that the T.V. part is over...she has a lot going on now and I'm sure her elimination was more of a blow to me and to most of you than it was to her..she's a very sweet, beautiful, and talented girl and I'm sure most of you join me in wishing her the best in everything she pursues in life...thanks again all you steelers for your support of Jennifer.
Highest Regards,
Russ H.

Well guys, based on what Russ wrote, Jennifer knows and understands how this "business" works. If you want to be in it, you just have to work within the parameters that are laid down. It ain't right - and it can sure be bad for blood pressure - but that's just the way it is. Remember, this in no way diminishes her talents and abilities. By the way - John Floyd - if the "little red hat" you're getting is like mine, congratulations!!

Yes Sir
Should be very much like the little red hat you wear, The Southern Steel Guitar Convention at the Saluda SC Shrine Club is my favorite Event, I've have been Helping out unofficially now since 2000 off and on. I have wanted to be an official part of it working to help support the Shriners Childrens Hospitals. I never had a weekend off So I could do it in North Carolina Where I live, because the dates conflict with the Steel Guitar Show, So this opportunity was a blessing for me, I can do it in SC 3 weeks before the next show in Saluda.

Bro Jimmie you should come down to one of our shows, Would you believe that the Shriners in Saluda South Carolina have put on the Largest number of Steel Guitar Shows in History, #70 coming up in May. Russ and Laney Hicks will be with us in August, Thats gonna be a Good one. Every show is like a big family reunion. Check the Events and announcements part of this forum for details on the May 15th and 16th Show.

I would like to point out that I too was very disappointed that Miss Hicks lost out. I think it was a very big miscarriage of some very fine talent. But I would also like to point out that even though we disagree with what happened, it does not give us the right to drag the other fellow over hot coals, call him names and run down his talent. He was out there doing the best he could and letting the chips fall where they would. We need to be very careful about running down someone else. It may come back to haunt us someday.

Saw the first one or two episodes of NStar this time around... I was pretty disappointed with the big change in direction.

Other than the "Goober", it just seemed like there were all these folks who were way more conventional, and unoriginal this time around. Last year, there was the torch singer with the black hair, a Norteno singing latino, and a bunch of bar tested honky-tonk kind of folks.

I just got much more of a sort of bland, inoffensive machine-ready feeling from this year.

I dug Jennifer's voice, and it is a pity she didn't get the final prize...

The above isn't a reflection on her, it's just a reason why (in general) I couldn't keep myself curious about this season... too new-countryish for my non-commercial tastes, too glossy... for what it's worth, I kind of appreciated the originality and "different-ness" of the dude in the overalls... at least he had some personality (whatever his musical skill might have been is a separate question... Wasn't that Jennifer that sang backup with George Strait on TV? I don't remember. Well, anyway I watched part of an episode of NS and saw where Jennifer kicked everybody's a** when she sang in front of Imus. She slammed those guys. I'm sure Jennifer will do well no matter.
Hey, I wonder if Natalie Maines would have made the tryouts if she wasn't with the DC's?

The gal who sings backup for George, Alan and a few others , who was also in the contest was Marty Slayton..she got the boot a few weeks back..for me that was the advance notice of ..."Warning - Goober Ahead"..

My wife is so-o-o ticked off that Goob is still there. She says there's no way he should be. He's not a Nashville Star. She says he'd be better suited in a Branson type family/comedy show.

Her 'ticked-ness' started when Jennifer got booted. I, of course, have yet to see an episode...

I have contiued to watch the show and I find the talent left to be entertaining, good but stardom, well thats up to the fans. I have heard nothing that would catch my interest so far(this week) to include them in any record collection I have. But they could develop with good songs, good arrangements and studio masters. They seem like nice gentleman and they have survived the popularity contest of the show, some with less talent than those who have been eliminated. I don't think some of the material fit and a lot of weaknesses have been exposed. My gripe is that the show has no-talent idiots sitting in judgement each week. Why not have true country greats or have beens sit on the panel. Look for the Canadian phone lines to burn up for it's contestant....My personal opinion is the one eliminated (fourth) should have had one more week at least. But after all that wasn't the popular choice, and it is a popularity contest.....no need to slam, whowver wins.JMHO.Certainly Buddy Jewell has given the show credability.
