Yes, copying CD's and music is against the law and I certainly don't condone it. My opinion is that a great deal of money is being spent ( has been spent ) on CD's that are total trash and the general buying public is tired of it. You can't return a crappy CD or Video to the store for a refund regardless of the licensing reasons, a 14 year old does not give a flip about licensing litigation they just know they have been had by a poor record. I still buy CD's ( very few) from artists that I know will provide a quality product but I suspect that they are far and few between. I want to own Buddy's CD's not copy them !

..some food for thought, going back to Jeff Lampert's admonition against indulging in self-righteousness...as I read this topic and as I type this response I am at work during working hours and I am using my employer's computer...in short, I am stealing from my employer..they are paying me good money to use the time I spend here to work for them, not to spend on personal matters, and they provided this computer strictly as a tool to help accomplish my work goals, not to chat with you guys..
...I see a lot of other people's posts made on usual work days during usual business hours...some of you may be self-employed and working from your own homes on your own time...those of you who are posting from work using your employer's computer are also stealing from your employer...and I'll bet the salary and benefits we've stolen from our employers could buy one hell of a lot of CD's...
...of course, this may not apply to you...

Good thought Pat, and so true. I have had to fire two employees in the last two years because they thought they had a God given right to use my computer for their own perpose during work hours when I was paying them! Now that's what I do, at least it's my own hand in my own pocket,(people are starting to talk about this also!)

I use my CD-R drives for file backups, and for original music. The thought of pirating music CDs never crosses my mind. Why would I do that? If I bought a CD, I really have no reason to copy it in the same format.
I have a Philips DA CD-R burner that I use to make CDs of my LPs and tapes. It can be used to make copies of CDs, but again, why would I do that? I already have the CD. I can only listen to one at a time.
Yeah, copying is theft. If you love music, you should be happy to pay to support the industry that brings it to you. Whether it's a band effort or a million dollar production, the people who create the music deserve to be paid by those who consume the music.
