...maybe, maybe not...maybe Papa took the news about Billy Joe really hard and took off on an Antarctic expedition when he caught the fever and died...or maybe he sold the farm and took a job shearing sheep in Australia...maybe Papa was a drug-running mule in the off-season, and caught the fever in South America...maybe Papa was just a gentleman farmer and made his real money selling contract labor in Sri Lanka...or maybe..
