Ron - two questions. What is "professional music"? Doesn't that mean just that you are experienced and get paid for your efforts. If that's true, then B&R are pros too. Much of their stuff has been recorded by other pros and they are being paid real well to play "Save a Horse". Second, how come I don't know you. I was raised in Albuquerque. I left on the road around 1975 and haven't been back much since. My brother still lives in the south valley.
Kevin - thanks, me too.
Don
Edit: I am new to steei but B&R use a guy named Mike Johnson and he is wonderful. He has a right nice pedegree. CLICK HERE for more information on this Peavey Artist.

Hey Don. I'm sorry if my sense of humor was perhaps too subtle and you didn't catch it. Actually, I very much appreciated your comments here. I was indirectly lampooning people who are too closed minded to do as you did: listen to something long enough to learn to appreciate something about it. You're obviously a very well-read (or is it "well-listened"?) musician and I find much to admire in your posts. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Yup, now we're on track. I picked up on Jim C's train of thought and tried to add to the humor. Sometimes when I insert my tongue too far into my cheek, it makes me type stupid. Anyway, I guess in one respect, I can honestly say I have yet to have the 'pleasure' of hearing this particular song. I don't listen to any contemporary country radio, nor do I watch CMT, so I guess I'm out in the cold on this one. However, it sounds like I'm not missing much.
Carry on.

I will play any song that puts $$$ in my pocket! I play music without prejudice if there is money involved.

I think I may have misjudged this song at first. It actually combines Country and Rap really well and I think the perfect name to call this melding of the two styles in this perfect union would be best described by joining the names together and I can't think of a better word than CRAP!
P.S. Thank you Billy Hill
[This message was edited by Garry Vanderlinde on 20 August 2004 at 12:51 AM.]

Come on fellas! Surely you must draw the line somewhere on what you will or will not play. I like money, too, but if I can't play the music that's in my heart then I won't play at all. I'm not saying you shouldn't play "Save a Horse..." if you like it. I'm sure you probably want to make your audience happy and that's fine. But some of you are sounding like you couldn't care less about the music you are playing and that's a pretty sad way to go. There's better ways to make a buck if that's all that matters.

It's not the music that is fun, it's playing the music that is fun. If you are covering a tune then the fun is to try and do it as accurately as possible.
Now, if you are sitting in the living room playing for yourself, or choosing music that you are going to listen to or study, then that is a different story.

. Last night we played at the Best Westeren in Erie Pa. and had to play it over. The people love it,I didn't belive it myself. They where having fun, sang it with the band and dancing.Having fun what is wrong with that? When playing out it's all about having people enjoy and having fun,and not always about me,that's why I 'm getting paid We also played Sleep Walk -WOW Sleep Walk and Save The Horse by the some band, for the same people. Tonight we are playing back at the BW and will play it again Maybe 2or 3 times

I honestly don't know why there's such a fuss over this song. Is it more laced with inuendo than "Plastic Saddle" was? That one came out almost 40 years ago, when morals were much more conservative, and it didn't raise this big a stink.
I liken all this to the old controversy that the Washington Monument was constructed as nothing more than a phallic symbol. People who want to see sexual imagery , will. It reminds me of the old joke where a guy is taking a Rorschach (inkblot) test in a psychiatrist's office. Every time the psychiatrist shows this guy an inkblot, the guy says..."That looks like a man and a woman making love." The psychiatrist tells the guy that he has a strong fixation on lewdness and coitus, to which the guy then replies..."Of Course! That's because you keep showing me all those dirty pictures!"
