Jason, the song (at least the first minute or so of it) has been played here in the states on several news shows. And, as here on the Forum, it's catching a lot of flak, re: the subject matter of the song.

My own comments are based on its musical merit...and not its political correctness, or lack, thereof.
[This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 28 July 2002 at 06:03 PM.]

This follows the belief or viewpoint that Steve Earle is giving comfort ,or aiding and abetting the enemy or using the killers to sell records.
That ain't how I see it and obviously is how you see it.
Nothings going to change it either way, you can throw in names like Hitler and whatever 'til we all shuffle off this mortal coil, but what I see and what you see obviously are different things.

So I don't have a problem with the subject matter and musically I'm a fan of Steve Earle and his music, so once again I look back at all this tiresome attacks and wonder why I have totally wasted my time on this trivial narrow minded outlook from others.

There was a quote by I believe H.L. Menken that went something like "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public"

Steve Earl knew exactly how we (American's, not Australians) would react to this song. He gets his kicks being a "rebel", just like all the baggy-pants, nose, eye, and tongue ringers we have in our country. Obviously, they want to draw attention to themselves. Maybe they didn't get the attention from their parents that they needed growing up or whatever, so they try hard to get it in what ever form they can now, good or bad. It is sad. But, in Jason's comment he quoted Earl, and he hit it right on the nose. He said, (in my words), "I don't condone Lynd, but...." Now, that "but" says alot to me. Yeah, right. He condones him. He relates to him. He's one of their kind- a rebel. And all the like-minded rebellious lot of them will go and buy this record. Just like he wants. I am not, have never been, nor will ever be, an Earl fan. I hear no vocal talent, instrument talent, nor do I think any of his songwriting represenst anything close to talent. But, I don't care who sang this song, or who wrote it, it would still stink, even if Hag wrote it. (God forbid) Now, onto the discussion of sick, murderous songs on this thread, let's not forget another song that I can't stand, "Goodbye Earl".

This is one heck of a topic. We have people whinning about Unions, not liking certain actors or high visibility types, and worrying about a stupid lost kid who was in country long before the troops got there. He didn't kill Spann, and Spann was no boyscout--he knew the risks, he was a CIA field operative. I feel for his parents, but Spann knew what could happen. We should feel good about Spann and that he did what he thought was right for the country, but Lindh is not the enemy. Intolerant unthinking nationalism is. It has been conflated wrongly with religion. Islam is not at war with the West. The Unions are not to blame for high prices. (Where did that digression come from? Are you gents for real?) Corporations go offshore to avoid taxes, take jobs to Asia and the Caribbean and some of you want to lambast the Unions? The working class has seen constant decline since 1966 and you want to blame Unionites? Get a grip. We should be grilling the sorry SOBs in Washington and Wall Street that have been ripping off the working man for the last 35 years. We should have our foot in all these crooks behinds, yet you want to equate any kind of political action as being related to Communism? Where have you been? Even the commies aren't commies anymore, and if our idiot politicians would worry about whats up at home instead of abroad, we wouldn't be in this bloody mess. Osama Bin Laden is our very own creation--we supplied money to him and others and even trained him. Have you ever seen the Gen. Schwarzkopf interview? He is our Frankenstein's monster--a gollem. Why is it that Americans always look to the outside to blame someone or something, and refuse to take responsibility any longer. If we don't get our act together Steve Earle's little cage rattling song will be the last thing we have to worry about. That said, I am outta here. I should have put this on the OTB in any case.
[This message was edited by Del Rangel on 01 August 2002 at 11:57 AM.]

[This message was edited by Del Rangel on 01 August 2002 at 12:01 PM.]

[This message was edited by Del Rangel on 01 August 2002 at 12:03 PM.]

Hey Del, put a sock in it! You made some good points but insulting us is ridiculus. What makes you think you are any smarter than the rest of us on this thread? We are entitled to our opinions just like you are whether they be right or wrong. Maybe you should start reading the backs of some cereal boxes...you never know what you might learn.

Well, I gotta say that I haven't had a bowl of Captain Crunch in a long time, so I just may do that! (Frosted flakes aren't too bad either) As for Opinions, you are correct. I would never argue with that. As far as smarter? I have gone from the Navy, to carpentry and cement finishing, and now at 40, on to being a History Prof. I don't have a dollar to my name, have a half finished manuscript that I will get to when I have time, and my ex still hates me and wants me to rot in hades. Don't worry there Erb, believing myself smarter than the rest of you is not an issue!
[This message was edited by Del Rangel on 01 August 2002 at 09:15 AM.]
