Marty,
To review your steel playing, I would prefer a tune with less 'busy' drums, and the steel higher in the mix. From what I have heard, I think you are an excellent player, perhaps your vibrato is too fast (IMO), your intonation is excellent. Your tone isn't my tone, but if that's what you like, different strokes etc. I would like to hear something that wasn't a first take: record a slow tune that you have rehearsed, we may be pleasantly surprised.

Marty,

I listened to the song 30 times before replying. I think you have the beginnings of a nice track here. I think the song has some strong soulful points.

Hopefully I can help with some (hopefully non-offending)criticism;

I do agree with b0b that the country licks sound a little strange in the tune. They also make it sound a little too "Mark Knofflery"

I also feel that the picking is a little too uneven and a compressor on your guitar would "even-out" the different levels of volume & sustain some notes have. Maybe just a little more control of the volume pedal will work. The way it is, I can hear where your using your fingerpicks and when you're using your thumb pick. The programmed backround music doesn't change it's dynamic range at all and it makes your levels all the more critical. On the minute/second counter you can see it get much lower in volume after 1:17 to the end of the song. This is the point in the song where you want to have it build into something bigger than the earlier part of the song.

If you had real musicians playing the backround music and they were playing off of your dynamics and vice/versa it would really help also.

Last but not least... A title of the song would help with some "visualization" while listening to it.

Overall I think it's a good tune and it's nice you posted this to give us a little insight into the person that seems to be "Under The Spotlight" on this forum right now. It shows you really can play and have a soul. It takes guts to ask for opinions after all the recent dialog that always seems to have your name in the equation somewhere.

I give it a 7 because "it has a nice beat and you can dance to it" :0

Come on b0b, when somebody started ragging on Carl for signing his posts with Christian references, he was roundly defended by most of us including me. I don't remember you telling him he couldn't do that here for fear it might offend somebody. Explain that!

If anything is offensive, it's Tim Harr and his 'type'. Whining, bed-wetting, hand-wringing crybabies. That's what they are and most folks here know it and won't say it. But I WILL!

I WILL NOT, ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to have my style of communication, my choice of metaphors, my right to speak my mind (or lack of it), dictated by you or anyone else. I have complied with your demand regarding 'profanity' because, even though your standard is personal and your enforcement DEFINITELY arbitrary targeting those who you just 'don't like', I can express myself quite well without it.

Herb Steiner and Michael Holland and others can use the 7 letter euphemism for sphincter and you don't say a word. Holland and Harr can launch personal attacks because of some childish vendetta but you look the other way.

See b0b, like it or not, you're in the public eye too. Lots of folks watch your actions and judge your consistency (or lack thereof). There are a lot more posts on this thread which either vindicate or, at least, tolerate my style of expressing my views and my right to do so. And a lot more in my mailbox!

No, I don't want to run ANYBODY off!
If they don't like it, stay out of it!
Seems rather simple, wouldn't you say?

Not funny, Mr. Harr?
No, I don't suppose this one is.

harr harr harr...
ban Mr. 'personal attack' Harr

Sorry Richard and Danny, I was ranting while you were posting. I appreciate all the comments so far (those dealing with the TOPIC, that is) and am assimilating the information provided regarding my playing style and physical technique.

As far as equipment (compressors and so forth) I am so NOT a gearhead. The only thing I know for sure is that a noise gate doesn't work well with steel! Image

Keep 'em coming; you're helping me with valuable information to use on future recordings.

Thanks people!

Bye, Marty. You're outta here. I don't have time to monitor everything you write. I'm tired of the complaints, and I'm tired of your attacks on other members.

I may not be true to the letter of the rules, but I'm no lawyer. You and I both understand the spirit of the rules, and you know that your recent attacks have crossed that line.

Ahh, Marty... Things finally got back on topic and you pushed it.

I thought it was silly how your request for critique was turned into personal attack, but I knew the other shoe was gonna drop over those last comments you made to Tim and b0b.

This IS b0b's house, y'know. Take care.

Marty,

Your personality is so loud your steel guitar playing could not be heard. And ironically, your request for a review of your steel guitar playing gets you kicked off the forum. There is a very important lesson here. Put your pride aside and learn from it.

I am sorry to see you go but I support B0b's decision.

Frank
I, truly suprised at your comments regarding
my grandmother being in the house,,,now ,now.that is not something I would expect from a person who calls himself a pro,,,far from it. RESPECT..CONSIDERATION & life will be easier for you my man.

As for your comments about my writing "crap" that too makes me laugh...Im particular when Im reffered to as "crap".

Now hear this,,,,define what you refer to as crap? my stories? me? what? take it this way.

There are many kinds and types of crap.

There is "Bird Crap"
Dog Crap
Cat Crap
Mouse Crap
Monkey Crap
Donkey Crap
Horse Crap
Alligator Crap
Snake Crap
Pig Crap

and a host of other type of Crap..,,,,,,,,,,
My advice to you is "take your pick" but Please. Please for goodness sake use a pooper

Actually, Jody, you are not the Grammar Grandma. It was a play on words to describe our favorite local Grammar/Spelling teacher--Marty. I have never known you to correct one's spelling. Of course, you may be kidding about this and I failed to catch it.

Nothing against you, Jody. I just had to get the so-called feel-good postings out of way before "the games" could begin. Once a thread starts going down that slope of "canwe canwe just get along," it can get out of hand.

Actually, I do respect my elders, but on this Forum we all look the same age, size, and color.

Later, Daddy! Image

Marty asked?
QUOTE]AND, it was done in one take (the FIRST take)! I hated it when I first heard it and told her to delete it but she didn't. When I heard it a couple months later, I was glad she didn't.

I know what MY critique of it is; what’s yours?[/QUOTE]
It was followed by 10 "ON TOPIC" replys, the 11th post, Frank came out with an "OFF TOPIC" reply, the 13th post was also "OFF TOPIC" by Tim,
both attacked Marty. The 14th post Marty came with his first line of defence.I need to know whats going on here,I like the Forum but not too much when someone is removed for defending himself when all he wanted to know was what we thought about his playing. ImageRay

Time to say something.I've watched Marty's replies for a couple of months and it seem s he has calmed down alot in the last month. And I mean alot. But I don't see ;how someone can get into to it with someone over a key board. I have watched people reply BACK to Marty and really all they had to do was ignore him. And if he was really offensive all any one OR everyone had to do was to type around him as if he was'nt there. Go back and look at his past replies and it's there. ALL PEOPLE HAD TO DO WAS TYPE AROUND HIM. NOBODY was forced to reply back to him. Every one could have just ignored his replies as if he wasn't there. Kinda like SILENCE IS GOLDEN. After no replies to anything he was sayin he would have eventually figured out that his tactics weren't workin and would have fell in line MAYBE A LITTLE. And I'm sure he's gonna have something really crude to say about my post but I could give a ----. I think that this FORUM is like makin a spoked wagon wheel.
Spokes attached on 1 end to hub and on the other to the wheel. Some spokes crooked and some spokes straight. BUT you have GOT to have the spokes for the wheel to turn.Marty I aien't sayin which one you are. You figure it out. Now I don't know Marty and probably never will, and I'm not on any crusadefor him. And I'll probably never get to know anyone else on here, but would love to meet everyone on here some time. There's no bout adoubt it,everyone on here is VERY interestin people and it would be interestin to meet and greet them all, including Marty. Now I've seen some pretty interestin and HEATED discussions and hell let's just say it:REAL HEATED DISCUSSIONS on here and I'll just bet that last sentence immediately brought some topics to mind as you read it. I dont need to mention any because you all know at least ONE and by mentionin them will just bring on ;the fire and brimstone again. YEAH,let's just fire off one or ten and see if we can get some memories going. My man plays better than your man, My geetar is better than yours, My man has better tone, Who is the fastest picker, has the best tone, YADAH YADAH YADAH. Now I know I'll never be in a league in playin with probably 100% of the people on this forum but it want be because I want be tryin till I'm near dead. That don't deminish my LOVE for this instrumentn just like everyone else on here and that includes, I would presume (no way uh-uh not ASSUME) Marty. And I reckons some people will be P----- because of this reply thinkin I'm defendin Marty. NOPE Just statin the facts maam. And if there was a ballot taken I would think Marty would be voted back in. But I would never want to see a ballot taken for this type of stuff on this forum for it is b0b's call and he has every rite to call it as he sees it. And after readin some of the other replies I think some don't want to see him booted off either. Now I've chased enough rabbits and almost runnin neck and neck with Jody's length on replies( Jody not being sarcastic I love'em and keep'em comin and GOD bless you) so I know after a good nite's sleep cooler heads will prevail. HEY how bout a time out corner for Marty for a while. All of this is just my 2$ worth and I'm stickin to it. Kenny Ray

......Honest Frank, he IS a nice guy or at least he was to me in St. Louis. No, I don't agree with everything he says or how he says it but I just don't pay a lot of attention to nonsense that doesn't interest or amuse me (this thread HAS amused me!). I must say that Marty is the best button puncher I have ever seen on this forum. This ranks up there with some of the discusions you and Tom Quinn have shared in the past. Image Besides, you know I like everyone except................naw, I don't want to get him started again! Image Good to have seen you Tuesday.

I had written a long response about how we shouldnt judge others character based on a few postings on a message board but I deleted the whole thing because theres really no use in trying to change anyones mind. I will say that anybody (and I do mean ANYBODY) who is so shallow as to judge another mans character based solely on a few postings on this board, needs some adult supervision onhand before they attempt to cruise around the www with their feelings on their shoulders.

Marty is you can still read this after having received the sharp end of b0b's axe, I liked your pickin and I like your humor. I respect a "Set" way more than leg humping but thats just my personal opinion.

Jody, unfortunately you deleted it before I got a chance to read it. Now you seem hacked off and it appears you have declared at least this thread, if not the entire Forum as invalid.

A general reminder not directed to anyone in particular: A communication environment such as a public Forum is not for those with a thin skin and it is not always wise to pick a "fight" with hard-hitting counter-punchers unless you can counter-punch yourself.

Ray, you almost got it right on the sequence of this thread. My first post had to do with the comment made about credibility. Just because one can play does not give one automatic credibility in one's statements about music. I still strongly disagree with the view that the C6 is the cop-out neck.

Futhermore, when one uses the criteria of who is the greatest player based on being the complete player, then it is the Big E hands down. There are a lot of great players some are more special to me than others, but to pick the one guy who can do it all on pedal steel and do it well (arthritis and all) it the Master. That is accurate even when you leave out E's contribution to steel guitar including being a part of the design of Sho~Bud, Emmons, EMCI, the Emmons Split (splitting the what one pedal originally did into the A-B pedal we have today), E-66 pickup, MatchBro, just to name a few.

Mike Weirauch, it was great seeing you as always. Many of these folks who have never met you in person would be surprised what a great guy you are. I know that my revelation of that makes you mad as it ruins your image and it is because it makes you mad that I did it! Image

I seem to remember how you FELD about a certain MAN, but you guys got over it and worked it out! Image

I am sort of sad about the Marty exit, but when he declared he would not change his communication style, he was being defiant until the end. I wish it could have been worked out.

The man has a lot on him in his personal life and he is not going to whine about it. No need to worry about Marty. He is a Marine vet and you better believe those guys are tough and can handle what is thrown at them.

Still, it was fun messing up one his threads for a change and you all know it!

Severe Topic Drift. Could we confine our replies to the original topic, please? The issue of Marty's "involuntary resignation" is addressed in a separate Forum topic.

Thanks for your cooperation.
