file size to big too email

Wiz; my church has changed the way they offer their recorded services from cassette tape to cd. They currently have a pastor out of town and can't do it and a message that has been saved as an mp3. The file size is 77986 kb. It's too big to email and they also have no one in the church that has the time to do what ever it takes to burn it to cd. Can you help me help them? Please remember to talk to me as if I was a 4 yr old. Sincerely, Greg

That's about 78 MB.

The email limit is often around 10 MB.

I'd guess this is spoken word only, without music?

You can use a program such as Audacity to resample the mp3 and then export it at a lower bit rate to save space. It may now be something like 128 kbps or even higher, when 32 kbps or even 16 kbps is OK for the spoken word.

You could also convert it to mono if it happens to be stereo now. That would cut the size in half.

For instance: I have a 62 minute spoken word mp3. Here are the sizes for different bit rates:

64 kpbs, mono: 29 MB

32 kbps, mono: 14 MB

16 kbps, mono: 7 MB

They all sound fine.

Burning to CD can be done with any of many programs, but is more complex than simply shrinking the file and emailing it, if that is acceptable. If you put it on CD, there wouldn't be any reason to shrink it first.

Use RapidShare (website) or some other public file sharing (cloud) resource. You can upload it, they can download it. Usually free...

Mitch, I really appreciate your quick response, but I think for practical purposes, Chris has the right Idea!
You could just post that weeks sermon / link in the bulletin from week to week.! You can keep or delete sermons as needed. GREAT idea. I've been doing about the same thing with some music I hare sometimes using pickosong.com

Yep.

Divide 77986 by 1000 to convert to Megabytes and you are left with about 78 MB, when 500 MB is the maximum.

I don't know what Rapidshare's account maximum is--you may have some sort of overall storage limitation and have to eventually delete older files to make room.

I think 500 MB is the limit PER FILE, not per account.

Seems like the sermons are being recorded at way too high quality in the first place. You don't need a lot for spoken word.
Online sermons are pretty popular, if you google you'll find some ideas. Like http://www.sermonaudio.com/main.asp

A cool thing you could do, if your church has a web site, is to put the sermons in a (free) audio player like the one on this site where it says Wild Country Music Player. You can add and delete sermons at (God's) will.

So............I can have whoever maintains the website install a FREE audio player that sermons could be uploaded to? And you'll share with me where I can get one of these audio players that does all of this.

ps: when Pam and I were down there the year before last (at the Long Hollow he goes there every week.) we met a real nice couple The man was very tall and retired military. Danced to every song (like everybody else) You wouldn't by some slim chance know him would you?

The audio player I use on the Wild Country site is available here. Your webmaster should be able to figure it out. It uses an XML file to tell the player what .mp3 files to play, and can be edited any time.
