Anyone ever given these tunes a try?

Post by Ted Duncan »

Has anyone given "Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado" a shot on pedal or lap steel? I guess I don't have to mention it's a John Denver tune.

I have a feeling it would probably make my eyes mist up a bit when played well on pedal steel or backing up a good vocalist.

Here's the straight up version from the Poems Prayers and promises album: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... n+colorado

This one is from The Wildlife Concert. In it there are some pretty fills and an extended solo from the second guitar that might inspire some Lap or Pedal Steel player.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43Aup7mSSN0

Doug Weaver has 2 YT vids showing how to play the tune and the solo from that concert.

Has anyone ever given "A Dream is a Wish Your heart Makes" (some call it "Cinderella") a try on steel or lap steel. Its an old tune from a Disney movie. I think this tune has a kind of Hawaiian/dreamy vibe to it. It's pretty straight forward, I don't think the chord changes would be all that hard. Could be played slow and dreamy or up-tempo and jazzy.

I have searched on the YT and Internet and come up with nothing.

The reason I ask about these tunes is that I STILL haven't built my lap steel yet and I'd really love to hear somebody good play them.

Has anyone given "Near You" a shot on pedal or lap steel? To my ear this might be a good pedal steel tune.
About 10 years before George and Tammy recorded it, in 1957 Roger Williams had a pretty good hit with it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrCWQc4yh60

I think if somebody could pull some stuff from William's version and some of the harmonies from George and Tammy's vocals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPzykWpSFBE this just might be a good steel guitar tune.

As before, I have searched on the YT and Internet and come up with nothing.

I have a list of tunes I want to give a try when I get my lap steel built and this is another one of them, but it might be some time before I can make them sound like they should.

Has anyone given "Since I Met You Baby" a shot on pedal or lap steel? Now on this one I have found a band ... The Tone Poets who did a version where someone has done a pretty good solo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZScYPZKbIhI , but I am thinking about a cover somewhat closer to the 1956 Ivory Joe Hunter version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu8P0Ng-hXA Saxophone and all.

In my searching, I was looking to see if Dwight Yoakam ever covered this one to see if he did something worth steelin' ... but no luck. It's almost unbelievable that ol' Dwight cover this one. Anyway, I did find a version by BB King and Katie Webster and I think their vocals (not BB's guitar) might have some stuff for a steel player. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvfw7me8ugM

Like I said, I have searched on the YT and Internet and haven't been able to find somebody doing a Pedal or Lap steel version of this tune. If you do know of a Pedal or Lap Steel version of these tunes, could you please post them here.

As soon as I get my lap steel built I'll stop posting these, I promise. But if you also have a list of tunes fit for the Pedal or Lap Steel and can't find a Pedal or Lap Steel version, why don't you post them here? Maybe I'll add them to my list ... or maybe we could convince a REAL player to give one a try.

Ted,
I'm in the process of tabbing out "Near You" along with "Since I Met You Baby" for pedal steel guitar in the E9th tuning.:D

Well thank you so very much Erv. I really appreciate that, but could I ask you ... once you get them worked out could you please record yourself playing them and post it somewhere ... or maybe I'll just PM you my telephone number and you could could prop up the phone by your steel so I could hear you play it?? I am jonesin' so hard to hear these tunes, I almost hear them in my head when I drop off to sleep.

I just GOTTA get that lap steel built.

Seriously, There are so many great pieces of music out there that I am dying to hear on pedal OR lap steel that have been overlooked by steel players or I just can't seem to find.

I REALLY appreciate you doing this.

Ted,
Send me your postal mailing address and when I get them tabbed out I'll send you a copy.
I have 5 Duncans on my mail list but I don't have a Ted Duncan.
When you get the tabs you should be able to play the songs, you don't need to hear me playing them.
