Post by Brian Henry »

When using the 7th string which other strings does one use to create a harmony? Many thanks. Brian

There are a lot of options depending on what chord(s) are active and what you intend to do with them. With no pedals the 7 string is the 9th of the E major, with A+B pedals it is the 6th of the A major, with B+C pressed it is the root of the F# minor, with Eb lever alone it is the 5th of the B major. With Bb+Db levers it is the root of an F# 7+9. Only scratching the surface here, but from this one can begin extrapolate the available passing harmonies. I hope.

I guess unison is technically an interval.
If you've ever listened to the sacred steel guys especially Robert Randolph their style has a big emphasis single note lead lines often on one string with a healthy dose of vibrato reminiscent of a singer.
If you have the F# to G# knee lever change this makes a unison with the string 6 G#. Very handy for doing the aformentioned lead lines and the two strings makes it kind of strum able for a chorused type sound.
Here's a thread where many including Paul Franklin chime in on the ways to approach this type of sound on E9.
Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright. Give praise to the Lord with the harp, chant unto Him with the ten-stringed psaltery. Sing unto Him a new song, chant well unto Him with jubilation. For the word of the Lord is true, and all His works are in faithfulness. The Lord loveth mercy and judgement; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

With A and B down, it give you the 6th. I use this a Lot emulating non pedal or faking swing stuff. I play a single neck but used to play a lot of non pedal C6.

It is also super handy doing lines with the 6th string, especially with the B pedal.

A super common use is with AB down (or AC down). Use string 7 instead of 8 and you have a minor chord.
