All Time Favorite Tune

This is hard because I can think of so many but I would say my all time favorite is: San Antonio Rose by Bob Wills and then by anybody else.

I'm especially fond of all of Leon Payne's songs. Though he was blind, he was a great writer and honky-tonk singer as well. He had a lot of hits recorded by stars such as Hank Williams, Jim Reeves, George Jones, etc.. Some of his songs are...

I think he ranks right up there with the best country songwriters such as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Floyd Tillman, though he's not nearly as well known.

What a fantastic talent he was! His band was called "The Lone Star Buddies", and Frankie Jurichek played steel for him back in the '40s and '50s. Leon was active up into the '60s, and died in 1969.

I've never understood the point of this song. Also, isn't the melody taken from Bach or something? Or does it just sound that way? I *do* like that organ.

Just a side note on "Whiter Shade of Pale," which I too love though it might not be my all time favorite... there's an Robin Trower instrumental on the first Procol Harum album called "Repent Walpurgis" that is a beautiful organ/lead guitar composition.

I was not into rock when I was in a very early Stone Poney band in 1968 and Bill Martin (the piano picker) said, "here, listen to these guys." I'm still not into rock, but I do like Procol Harum.

Currently, the steel songs getting the most play on my CD player are Spade Cooley's instrumental of "Yearning," with Murph on steel, "Brown Skin Gal" by Hank Thompson with Bobby White on steel, and "Helpless" and "Double Life," both by Little Joe Carson. But of course, there's too many favorites to mention.

Ernest: I like where they die also, but I never really noticed the music.

...unquestionably Beethoven's 6th Symphony, "The Pastoral", especially the second movement...just like Edward G. Robinson in Soylent Green, I'd choose that to listen to for my death song when it's my turn to check in to the euthenasia center..
