If religion or politics are important to the listener, then opinions stated in the lyrics are just as appealing or repulsive as the melody. Lucky for me, I don't like Toby Keith's music or politics so I don't feel like I'm missing anything! I used to listen to a lot of punk rock but I never listened to any skinhead bands.
Merle Haggard is the exception to the rule for me. He is talented enough for me to disagree and still listen. He'd be a great television evangelist.
