I have an H2 and it works well. The small displays on these things are the biggest drawback, I think. Plus the lack of a built-in speaker to hear what you've just recorded. I think that the old portable cassette recorders had a better user interface (5 big buttons), but the sound quality was really bad back then.

Your probably right b0b. I found a band cassette tape of mine from the mid 80's and it sounded like it did when I first recorded it. Didn't seem to loose any fidelity as far as I could tell. It was a lot easier then.
If money weren't a factor I wonder what the recommendation would be? Tascam or H2

I do recommend the H2 to anyone looking for a portable recorder. It's very flexible. At our band's recent amateur video shoot, we ran a line from the mixing board into the H2 to get a good high quality audio track. We were very pleased with the results. I use it for rehearsals too, and afterwords we dump the MP3 files from the SD card to a computer for distribution via our private web site. It's really very handy.

I've haven't tried any of the competing units. They might be just as good. The only improvements I want are a brighter display and bigger buttons. Getting old, you know? Can't see as well as I used to.

Tascam vs. H-2 recorders

Ditto on the H-2. For what it is, it is amazing. Has a USB out, records forever on SD cards, It will run about 6 hours on 2 AA batteries, but also comes with a power adapter for 110 volts. You can select recording from the front, the back or surround. The sound quality is nothing short of amazing for something not much bigger than a pack of cigarettes. It comes with ear buds that you can listen to what you have recorded or you can use the line out to go to your stereo, or the USB to your computer. There is a boom box called the Wedge Radio that is apparently an attempt to copy the Bose Wave Radio. It has a slot in it for the SD card. I haven't bought one yet, but plan to do so. Money back guaranteed if not satisfied. Available from ISN for $147.00, including shipping. Go to google and put in Wedge Radio for ordering information. Also, do some shopping around. $199.00 is too much for the H-2. I paid $157.00, including shipping, from B&H Photo in New York City and had it in two days.
