Win XP pro - "Hangs on driver install"....SOLVED !

Post by Nic du Toit »

Seeing this has to do with trying to upgrade my Telonics (VP) Firmware, I was wondering whether this problem has struck someone else.....

I downloaded the 'Toolbox" for the Telonics FP100 pedal, and ran install....all fine...BUT, running the driver install for the pedal is where the smelly stuff hits the fan...so to speak.
The install (Windows install screen) runs fine until the last entry "SiLib.sys" into Windows System32.
The green progress line runs to the end, but the "finish" message do not appear and the PC just 'hangs'..... the animation on screen still continues....with the files flying from one folder to the next. But other than the animation, the PC is totally dead....won't even react to "Ctl +Alt + Delete".

Tried uninstalling the software, and re-installing it.....no difference.
I must have pressed the restart button at least a dozen times to restart the PC.....
Seems like I'll have to forget upgrading my pedal.
Any ideas I could try ??

Nic, I will be meeting with the FP-100 software team tomorrow. We will get back to you with suggestions and/or requests for any additional information requested by the team. (They may request some particulars regarding your computer, cable, etc.)
Thank you,
Dave

Hi Dave, Thanks for joining in this discussion.....well, so far no comments from anyone, so Technically it's not as yet a 'discussion'....Ok, enough of the semantics......
I have a feeling that my problem is Operating system related, ,and not necessarily caused by your program....in other words a System32 error (XP Pro sp3 , Intel )....Hopefully I can get some pointers on how to solve this, before it escalates into a full-on crash.
Any ideas, guys???

I'm a PC tech. FWIW.

Is sounds like you may have found either a bad sector or a somewhat scrambled file system table.

Do this to find out:

1. Click start, run and type CMD in to run box then click OK. - A DOS window will appear.

2. In the DOS window, type CHKDSK /R and hit return.

3. You will be presented with a message that states that you cannot check the volume right now and would you like to run a check after the next reboot? Type Y to affirm, then restart your PC to begin your check of the disk.

**** Windows xp has a bug where sometimes the first time you do this if will not actually execute the chkdsk /r but reboot right into windows. Doing it again right away will get it going.

It should take a good long while. Anywhere from 20mins to 2 hours or more depending on many factors.

After it finishes, try your firmware update.

Hi Ron, Thanks for popping in.....we are on the same track..... I suspect a flacky spot on the hard drive.....I'm in the process of finding the file in System32\Drivers.... and renaming it by changing the file ext to .bak..... Then re-install the Toolbox program, so it can write the same file to a different sector, or bit.....you know what I mean.....If this fails to solve it (Did it before with another file and it worked), I'll do the checkdsk as you suggested. I'll report back to the forum about my progress.

Ron,
I checked the properties of the Silib.sys file, and noticed that it's a WDM helper file..... I then thought, Ok ...it's clashing with the WDM files for my Roland Interfgace, and /or Sonar Producer....both set to WDM ...
I then Started windows in SAFE mode, and did the driver install.....as smooth as a whistle.....Restarted in normal mode, Ran the Toolbox, and did all the Calibrations offered.....all without a hitch !..... Now I'm smiling. Thanks for everybody's input.
