Cannot Connect To Internet

Post by winston »

HP laptop with Vista Home Premium, 2 gig memory, dual core. Computer got infected with Vista Internet Security 2012. I got the virus out but cannot get the thing to connect to the internet, wireless or LAN. It says it cannot start DHCP services and gives error 1068. I have searched the net and so far I have not found a cure, tried a lot of stuff but no luck. Any help would be appreciated. thanks Winston May

To fix the problem, open a command prompt with administrator privileges (click on Start → type in “cmd” → right click on the command prompt and choose “Run as Administrator”) and type these commands:

netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset

If you have important data on the hard drive, copy it to a removable drive first. Also save all downloaded setup files for programs you use and all emails containing license codes, confirmations, etc. Actually, you can export your use files and settings to a remote drive, then import them once the reinstallation has completed.

Did you get a drivers disk with the computer? How about a Windows Vista DVD? You'll need them both unless you have a hidden restoration partition.

You can use the restoration utility at bootup (press a designated number key) to reinstall the OS, drivers and original included programs. All security will be out of date, including Windows Updates, browsers, anti-virus, media players, et al.

Whatever method you use, you must run Windows Updates repeatedly, until there are no more listed when you check for updates. Then reinstall your security software and other programs you saved to the removable disk.

Job is finished. There was a restoration partition, I just hit F11 and the computer did the rest. Updating everything today. Thanks again. Winston

As tedious as this is, it's better than having to install Windows from a disk, then install the motherboard drivers from another disk, then install your software.

AS you are installing stuff, get the latest versions of Flash, Adobe Reader, Quicktime, iTunes, Java (East of Crakatoa), Firefox, Chrome, etc. The old versions of browsers, plug-ins and file readers will be out dated.
