Weldon MYRICK - I'll Come Running

Post by Alex Cattaneo »

This tab covers the intro and the first verse. I'm hoping people familiar with M. Myrick's technique and style will comment. The original Connie Smith recording is VERY fast and those fills are great to hone your pick blocking skills.

No problem Kenny. Anyone who wants the tab in PDF, just send me a PM or email. Also, this tab covers the intro and first verse, but I will tab the break sometime soon.

I should mention that the ride resolves to Db. Modulation from G to Db! Pretty unusual, hey? I'll try and lift everything else and make a complete PDF with the whole song.

"Manual of Style"

Post by Fred Amendola »

Around 1980 or so, Jimmie Crawford, Winnie Winston and myself sat with Weldon, preparing his part of the Manual of Style book. Welephant Walk from Area Code 615, and Hotfoot are both in there.

It was a great time. We picked his brain as much as we could. And I asked him about a lot of the solos he played on the Charlie McCoy albums.

But during this, the "I'll Come Running" intro came up and we tabbed it for the book. The important thing here is that he is dragging his thumb across two strings, 3 and 4, and also doing it after picking 5 with his thumb.

Rather than TablEdit this out, and for the sake of time, here's a two page clip from the book. This is Winnie's calligraphy that resulted from the manual tabbing that we did back then.
The pedal changes are before the fret number, while the fingering is after.

Hope this helps.

Wow Fred!!! Thanks for posting this! I will compare with what I have and change my tabs accordingly. I think as long as one has the D# to C# change on the second string, it will be playable. Very cool!

That's correct Alex. You need both the D and the C#.
This is a great lick, but the thumb dragging is tough, I think.
Bobby Black did something like it in Truck Drivin Man on the "Hot Licks, Cold Steel, Truckers Favorite" album.

Have fun.

Allright folks, the "I'll Come running" Saga continues!

I edited the tabs to reflect the technique described by Fred. Hit string 3 and 4 with a single thumbstroke, then strings 1-2 with index and middle, then string 5 with the thumb. Pick blocking alone won't do it, so it's a bit tricky... but it works! DD means lower string 2 a whole step and D means lower string 2 a half-step.

I only posted the first page, the rest remains as is.

Hi Alex. If you sent the PDF's to me, I lost them. I had some spam hit my computer, and Norton's took care of it, but I lost what I had in my mailbox. Thanks, :D

Thanks Quentin! I also tabbed out the solo played on this song by Gary Carter, who now plays with Connie Smith. It's worth a look!
