If I image my hard drive do I still have to reinstall applications?

Using an Disk Imaging software, e.g. Acronis True Image, will make an exact copy bit for bit of the original disk.

This will include everything, data, applications...

So, you will not have to install any software you already have installed.

Note that some Imaging software will "demand" that you use the same hardware for "restoring" the disk.

Macrium Reflect, free version, is very popular and will do what you want. You can backup (image) the hard drive to a second hard drive (either internal or external). Macrium will also image to a USB flash drive, but I don't know if the free version will do it.

I used to use Acronis but have moved to Macrium due to some problems I had with Acronis.
