Sir George Martin - 5th Beatle - RIP

Just heard that Sir George has passed. After the recent thread about who's passings should/should not be mentioned here, I thought twice about posting it, but George Martin was huge in the world of popular music for the past 50 years.

Thanks for posting, Jimbo, I hadn't heard the news yet. Huge loss, Martin was such a key component to the Beatles' sound and ability to get creative in the studio. Without him, some stodgy producer who couldn't go with the flow might have ruined them.

If there ever were a fifth Beatle, it would be Sir George.
He was an amazingly creative musician, well-versed in music of all kinds, and up to the task of producing the Fab Four.

I got to see Sir George in the flesh, at a Brian Wilson Tribute at Radio City in NYC in 2001. He was a special guest and I felt like I was in the presence of Royalty. Hard to believe it was 15 years ago.

I was too cool to see him live, and he was first class.

As well as the Beatles, I thought his work with America on their first few albums was great also.

Ian Whiteman, of '60s band The Action (link is above), has emailed us with his memories of Sir George Martin.

George was producing The Action's recordings at the time I joined the band in 1967, and it was strange to find myself comparing notes with him about The Guildhall School of Music where we had both studied the oboe. He didn't give a fig for the fashionable world of '60s London and dressed like a friendly bank manager, except that he gave us money instead of lending it. Unlike many in the music business he was completely trustworthy. Rest in peace, George.

My friend Katie Cook and her family knew George Martin, because when Katie was a child, she and her family would go to Christmas parties in England, and George Martin would be the Santa at the party. He had worked with Roger Cook, Katie's dad and my favorite songwriter, in addition to producing the Beatles.
