Weird BMI B>A lower pedal question

Post by Jack Kilbride »

Hey all, I recently picked up a BMI D10 used, and I love it. The first pedal on the left (next to the traditional "A" pedal) lowers the the B strings a whole step.

I have noticed that if I'm grabbing major chords with the A pedal and E>F lever (say a G major at fret 6) and release the A pedal to get a diminished triad (B diminished) the B string comes back sharp until I release the E>F lever, then it is back in tune.

However, when I instead choose to lower the 5th string with the B>A lower pedal with that same chord grip, it lowers the string in tune. I guess this is a "split" tuning?

Anyway, I guess I will get used to it. My question is; why doesn't the 5th string come back in tune until I release the F lever?

Same issue with releasing the A pedal occurs when the left pedal is set up for a half lower too.

Hi, Jack.

Question: When you are in A+F and release the A-pedal, do both strings (5 and 10) come back sharp of their target? Or is it just the 5th?

Really dumb question: when your release the A-pedal but stay on F-, are you positive your foot is completely up off of that A-pedal? It's super easy to have the bottom of your foot slightly touch it which will cause this problem.

Turn the guitar over, And closely check the linkage of the 4th and 5th strings, Engage A pedal and F knee lever. Watch the lower and raise levers on 4 and 5 strings while pulling and releasing A pedal then the E knee lever. Check if the guitar has an raise assist spring on the 5th string, (If the guitar has a raise assist spring,) Disconnect the raise assist spring. It could be not allowing the A pedal to return to open position.
From the problem you say you are having. Check to lower return springs on the 4&5 strings.
If the changer has spacers/washers between each changer finger. Check between the 4-5 strings.

From your description The problem, When the 4th string E is engaged with F knee lever. There is pressure or drag on on the 5th linkage, Or drag or binding on the 5th changer finger, in the changer. And not allowing the 5th string return to (B). Until the F KL is released.

Good Luck finding the problem and a quick cure. Happy Steelin.

Alright, thanks for all the responses guys. I fixed it, but have no real idea how. If I had to guess it was something catching in the changer. I oiled all the possible culperate places and I can get an easy diminished chord. Thanks guys!
