Identifying Two "Jiggs" Lemley Steel Guitars?

Post by Anthony Lis »

I was wondering if anyone might help me identify the instruments in these two photos of late 1940s/early 1950s steel guitarist Herman ("Jiggs") Lemley, borrowed from the Hillbilly-Music.com website.

I believe the first photo might show Lemley leaning on the upper two necks of a Fender Custom Triple-Neck (introduced in 1949), while in the second photo Lemley is perhaps holding a Rickenbacker DC-16 Deluxe Doubleneck (which debuted in c. 1950)?

I assume it would be very difficult to tell from the photos precisely what year these models were produced, but might anyone have thoughts on that, as well? Thanks.

I think from the indent between the necks that the Fender is a double-neck.

The Rickenbacker is a D-16. The DC-16 had covers over the tuners. I'm not sure what the round things at the ends of the fretboards are; those are not normally seen on either model.

As far as I know boxcar pickups on the Fender puts it at 49 at the latest.
