Roly Poly Hit For Dixie Chicks

Post by Garryharris »

I'm hearing from a retired producer, that if the Dixie Chicks version of Roly Poly found on the Asleep at The Wheel album was to be put on a single, it would go number one. What do you think?

I sort of doubt it. Classic material in modern arrangments sells albums not singles.
For instance on George Straits Chill of An Early Fall, the worst single was his cover of Lovesick Blues.
There were also some statements somewhere from Ray Benson after the grammy nominations
in January that Ride With Bob was in the 150,000 sales range and that the grammys meant me to him then gold albums.

The Dixie Chicks are hot right now and anything they put out would sell "X" number of copies. It would get air play, but it's not the current Nashville rock/pop so it may not get that much air play.

The best cut on "Ride With Bob". If the Dixie Chicks hold their own unique tradition, they will release something this different. Whether radio will adhere to the same standards of uniqueness however is highly questionable. Best, Boomer

Boomer,
My vote would be for Jason Robert's "End of the Line" and Willie and the Manhattan Transfer's version of Cindy Walker's "Goin' Away Party".
I still think I like their first tribute album better. Which one do you like better?

Well, Dayna, I do agree on your two favorites
on the AATW Wills CD, but the girls do a nice
loose job on Roly Poly. I like the second
CD best , it seems a little more relaxed and
it's nice that everybody in music wants to
sing on the Bob Wills tunes CD with AATW but
Ray or somebody should understand that just
because a person wants to sing Western Swing
can, Vince can play WS guitar but he can't
sing it. So on and on. There's alot of good
singers doing a little WS that could be
featured on these CDs, yes, I know stars sell
CDs hope I hope. Oh, well what does a 66
years of age man that's been listening to
Western Swing forever know (a lot) Thanks
BTW a good version of End of the Line is on
the Buddy Emmons sings Bob Wills record, now
there is a Western Swing singer, Mr. Emmons

I'm embarrassed, but I haven't heard the first tribute to Wills by Asleep at the Wheel. It is the next CD purchase on my list. Best, Boomer

I kind of like the originals of Bob's stuff (understatement of the year).
If it ain't broke don't fix it.

But!! having said that I agree with Dayna about Jasons track. The thing is it just wouldn't get any airplay at all on suburban (sorry I meant Country)radio.
[This message was edited by Steve England on 13 March 2000 at 09:55 AM.]

How many 14 year old girls, who have the Dixie Chicks right next to their Brittany Spears, know, or even care who Bob Wills is? How many of these people would buy an Asleep at the Wheel CD?

Hey Busgal, about classic tunes in modern arrangments not selling, I know it's been about 15 years or so but George Strait had a pretty big hit with "Right or Wrong".

I used to feel that the AATW cover of "Roly Poly" was a definitive version. But after hearing the "Big E" & Gregg's version on Swing Shift Band's "Swinging By Request" I think it's better.

Swing Shift Band:

Anyone have THE definitive version? By who, when?
[This message was edited by Rich Paton on 17 March 2000 at 09:23 PM.]

I am partial to the one on Merle Haggard's tribute to Bob Wills.
