My extended trip to the live music capital

Post by Janice Brooks »

When all was done I saw 7 shows of Cornell Hurd and 3 of Dale Watson.
Don Walser is in the worst shape I have seen him and has canceled his
Northwest dates. I spent 2 Saturday nights at the Broken Spoke which
were a big contrast. The first was Ed Burlson and the younger dancers
packed the floor. Last Saturday night Alvin Crow had a more
treditionel set. The older folk were prominent and decked out in Red
White and Blue including Alvin and James White.

I will send a picture to whomever wants it of my stage Debute Sept 2.
I was allowd to do backup vocals with Cornell. I also went to KUT for
Justin Trevino's live set and hung out at Ed Tutounts viewing party
the night he won on Who Want's to Be a Millionare

On a steel related note it was a pleasure to finaly meet Tom Mortinson, Dickie Overby, and to see Steve England sitting in with Cornell at the Texacalli

Back to work tomorrow sheez

Janice.
I like to have a picture. It sounds like you stayed busy during your stay in Austin. Glad you had a good time!

Janice, I'm really sorry to hear Don Walser is in bad shape. What's wrong with him?

Forumite Howard Kalish would be the one to comment specifically on Don's health, since he's DW's fiddler and bandleader. I can tell you that Don weighs close to 400 lbs., and I'm pretty sure he's diabetic. I understand his knees are in terrible shape, as you might expect from someone 67 years old and at that weight. At one time he had to be helped on and off stage; now he has to be helped with walking itself. Image

Don of course still sings like a bird, and still has his wonderful sense of humor. He's just a great ol' country boy and it's really sad for his friends to see his physical deterioration. Image
