Ray Price CD's with steel and fiddle lead?

Post by Don Benoit »

I have the the greatest hits vol 1, 2 and three but there isn't much steel on those. Can anyone suggest which CD's are the best to buy with the traditional steel and fiddle backups and without the symphony orchestra in the background?

I always liked the "Touch My Heart" album (with Buddy). But, if you want his old stuff (with Jimmy Day), find the album "Ray Price's Greatest Hits". It's got all the old stuff that made him famous...Crazy Arms, City Lights, Release Me, Invitation to the Blues, Heartaches By the Number, etc..

It seems like alot of the compilation stuff has a generous amount of his more commercial music on it... probably not what you're looking for.
I'd strongly recommend 2 classic recordings, both available in their entirety on CD: Nightlife (of course) and The Other Woman. That's the stuff!

There is a re-recording on Step One Records simply called Ray Price Greatest Hits. It's a two-cd set that could easily be condensed to one, but the good stuff is gooooood. Emmons is just all over it (the good stuff, that is.) Some of the prettiest steel you'll ever hear. Crazy Arms even has a steel kickoff instead of a fiddle. My favorite steel work on the CD--"Soft Rain." Our ol' Buddy shines. When you buy a Ray Price hits CD it's hard to predict what you're gonna get, 'cause he's recorded these songs 1500 times.

On the greatest hits set from Step-One, I was told by Leslie Elliot a few years ago, that Buddy played a D-10 original on those tunes to get that old sound.

outside of the prohibitively expensive Bear Family box set this is the best ORIGINAL stuff from the 60's I know of:

Night Life

The Other Woman

both available on CD from Koch records..

Night Life on Borders/amazon.com

The Other Woman, on Borders/amazon
[This message was edited by Dave Van Allen on 09 November 2001 at 06:44 AM.]

[This message was edited by Dave Van Allen on 09 November 2001 at 06:46 AM.]

Jason, do you have any more info on the step one re-recordings. They sound real interesting. I have a CD that Ray did for step one featuring old country standards. It's okay, but can be kind of sleep inducing, there aren't many up tempo songs on it.

Night Life, now there's an album Image

Does anyone have the Ray Pice 3 CD set listed on EBay? I wonder if it has lots of steel. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1482968529

Donny, Not every song on the Greatests Hits album has Jimmy Day on it. Some of those tunes have Jack Evans. Mike

Steve, the number of that Step One release is SOR-0012/13/14. As you said of the other release, it has some real snoozers on it, but CDs are great; you can just program out the junk. Too bad "Night Life" is on the second CD. If it were on the first, I'd just use the second for a frisbee.
