Let's hear it for Johnny Cox.

Post by Bill Hankey »

I've never heard "I'll Come Runnin'" played with such vigor,
and definition. Johnny Cox has proven once and for all, that the
steel parts can be mastered by a true artist. He stole the show!!
For those of you who missed the televised portion of the Opry, and
who have delighted in watching
Connie Smith in the past, I can only say, you've missed a glorious
moment in country music. Thanks
Johnny and Connie for the great up-tempo performance of " I'll Come
Running".

I'll double that, Connie just plain showed what being a seasoned Pro is all about. And I thought she looked great too.! Never in a million years did I imagine that she would have sang "I'll come running " on the live broadcast !! Give it up for Johnny Cox..great planned TV close up of him playing the entire solo ..

PS :many thanks to Joan, Janice and Michael for posting the line-up. As usual, my cable network line-up description was incomplete and listed everyone but Connie Smith ! Obviuosly the writer for the cable broadcast listing "doesn't get it" ...After all, Connie Smith with a burning Steel Player is old hat, old Country, she soesn't quite measure up to the New Country ..Be sure not to mention her name ...Had it not been for the post here on the forum I wouldn't have even watched. IF they had just put Connie Smith as the description by herself the viewing audience would have probably doubled !

I agree. Without the posting on the forum I would not have watched last night, but I am sure glad that I did. Thanks for posting the line up each week !

I wish I could have heard it. We don't get CMT (thanks AT&T Broadband). I'm seriously considering sattelite TV.

It would've been great if she'd got to do another song too! She's always been one of my personal favorites. I'd like to hear Johnny on some of her ballad stuff.

She did sing "Once A Day" but the CMT gods chose not to televise it. Image Image

I can't help wondering if Weldon
Myrick watched Johnny Cox tear into
"I'll Come Running", since he was
responsible for putting the steel parts on the original recording.
What an amazing creation, on the
part of Weldon Myrick. Johnny Cox
represented Connie Smith's song with all the expertise expected of
an accomplished steel guitarist.
Connie's performance left me with
a strong desire to hear more
hits from the past.

Bill: Any trip to Nashville and not getting to See Johnny perform with the Time Jumpers at the Station Inn on the given monday nights they play, is a wasted trip. And you got to see the "Triple neck".I believe the case must be on wheels. Image

I was so blown away by Johnny's playing that I didn't even pay any attention to the guitar itself (and I ALWAYS pay attention to the steel guitar). I noticed him wearing three finger picks, but I didn't notice three necks on the guitar. I wish I'd have taped it.

The guitar Johnny played on the Opry was a SD-10. I believe that's the guitar he uses on his road gigs with Connie.

Johnny made that guitar into a single neck with a pad in order to travel. He got that guitar in early 1998 if I remember right. He had just got that guitar when we first met in Knoxville that year. When he was flying alot, if it weighed over a certain amount, it costed like $75.00 extra to fly it. He figured that he didn't need the back neck with Connie so he started taking that lacquer guitar apart, and he had went and got some stuff to make a pad and put it where the back neck was. He was doing this on a Saturday afternoon before an Opry spot last year. That seemed to lighten it enough. I'd never seen one taken apart like that..kinda neat really. Anyway, he's been talking about making it back into a double neck again.

We're not online anymore at home..he doesn't get a chance to look at it much at home, seems like we're too busy, like most people I guess. I print things and take home for him to read. He said to tell everyone thanks for their compliments on the other night. I think he did a great job too. Thanks Teresa, for the neat camera shots.. Connie is singing better than ever. What a neat gig, huh?? Image

By the way does anyone else have Caught In The Webb yet?
Johnny and Weldon are among the steelers on this Webb Pierce Tribute
