Coal Miners Daughter Movie error

Post by Tony Prior »

Well watching the movie today, I noticed something that didn't quite click. Loretta was singing I Fall to Pieces in ET's record shop when it was a hit for Patsy Cline in 1960..The Steel player was playing an

Tony,
It was only a movie. Image If they had stuck to reality, in 1960 the steel player that played in the movie would have been about 11 years old. Image Image.

Hey Bob, of course it's just a movie. It was just an observation. I do this a lot, especially in WWII War movies. They usually have the Germans driving around in American trucks and Tanks painted grey !

In the last concert scene in the Loretta movie they have two banjo players, I wonder how accurate that is !

Just pokin' fun here..

Hey Tony,
I know this is probably off topic, but speaking of errors in WWII movies, did you ever see the Clint Eastwood WWII movie "Kelly's Heroes"? I always thought it was funny, in the scene with Don Rickles in the supply hut, the radio was playing "All for the love of Sunshine" by Hank Jr...a few years before he was even born Image That, and Donald Sutherland as a 1940ish "Hippie". lol

Sorry for the topic drift b0b, but it is the music category, and I did mention Hank Jr. lol

I remember seeing The Buddy Holly Story. It was an OK movie, but they obviously spent no time researching what guitars would have been appropriate for the day. Buddy died at just about the time that Fender released its first rosewood neck guitars but that's all there was in the movie. And as I recall, they weren't even using Strats (as the Crickets did). Given how many people are really into stuff like that, you'd think there would have been at least one person in the prop department that would have paid attention to this kind of detail. Image

I believe they were playing "All for the love of sunshine" from large speakers on the front of a tank during a battle. Whatever it was, it had dominant pedal steel in it. Like Lem said the song did not exist. But, the pedal steel didn't exit in the early 40's either, did it? Not only that, in the battle scene, what were they playing the music with? Record player? Tape? Oh well, like someone said, it's just a movie.

There's probably boo-boo's in every movie. I read that they hire people to look for them, but if the person(s) they hire doesn't know how are they going to find them?

I've seen some but don't recall what they were, just at the time I was watching the show. Normally, I can't watch a movie more than once so I can't really get into looking for glitches.

I noticed in the closing credits for the Coal Miners Band that Lonnie Godfrey was listed. He's a pretty good drummer who lives here in Virginia now. We work together in a band called the Legends who do mostly Classic Country.

Several of those "movie mistake" sites on the web - some are really interesting and fun to read - but: aren't we glad there are no "steel guitar player musical mistake" sites??

If there were a "steel guitar player mistakes site", I would have their server space used up with mine. Image

Hey Rick, the only thing Hollywood got right with the "Buddy Holly Story" was his name. Charles Hardin Holley.
There were so many mistakes in that movie made intentionaly, like they did not use the Crickets real names so they would not have to pay them any royalties.
He never was on a show with Sam Cooke at the Apollo Theater in New York. He played there but not with Sam.
The Real SURF BALLROOM in Clear Lake, Iowa does not look anything like the one in the movie, and he never sang "True Love Ways" in concert cause he didn't have strings with him to do it right.
And he never punched a Nashville producer out, that would have ended any chance he would ever have, if you recollect it was Decca that he tried out for in Nashville, and he got signed by Brunswick/Coral out of NewYork. They were the same company, now MCA.

I know this is alot of info on this but watch the movie again and see for yourself.
Take care.

Jerry,

If you see Lonnie, tell him "hello" for me. I worked with Lonnie in Loretta's band for several years.: Image Image

I've wondered something too about facts of the Movie Coal Miner's Daughter. When Loretta was living in Washington State and they cut her single "Honky Tonk Girl", Was the studio engineer supposed to be Speedy West? And did Speedy play steel on that record?

Yes, the producer was supposed to be Speedy. I believe Loretta told me one time that it was Speedy playing on it. I never thought to ask Speedy. I guess if someone talks to him, it would be a good question to ask.
