Moon Mullican suggestions
Occasionally I hear a recording by Moon that is very hillbilly with some wild steel guitar and it makes me yearn for more. I then track down one of his old LP's or that Bear Family CD and the music is nothing like the hot older recordings. So what's the Moon Mullican CD I'm looking for? Does it exist? Maybe that "Early King label sides" CD? I'm tired of buying stinkers!

Moon recorded for about 30 years and there are probably ten or so CDs out there of his material.
if you don't recall any song titles, it is kind of tough to steer you in the right direction.
if you are recalling something that had that 1945-55 sound, i would recommend the CDs of his King label recordings as released on the Westside label out of England. the second volume has just been released. this label features good sound quality directly from the surviving masters, and extended running time. He was on King a long time, and there were 4 LPs released, so there is certainly room for another volume from Westside-but that is dubious as these things don't sell in this day and age.
His pre-war stuff is very much in the western swing style of that day. Post-1955 he did that one LP for Coral called "Moon over Mullican", which has been on CD, and then he made some more traditional country recordings in the 60s for Starday, Kapp, and other small labels shortly before he passed away.
But the King stuff is generally regarded as the best and where he came to fame.

Pick up a record called "Seven Nights to Rock" on Western Records. It's got steel all over it - Speedy West,Bud Issacs,Bobby Koefer, and Asa Peveto.Jimmy Bryant is on a cut or two also.I have it on vinyl but I would be surprised if it's not out on CD by now.But that's the one you want.I have another record called "Sweet Rockin' Music" on Charly Records and it's pretty good also.Moon Mullican is the missing link between the early black swing bands like Count Basie and the western swing style of Milton Brown,Spade Cooley,Hank Penny, etc. He's also the prototype for the rock & roll piano style of Jerry Lee Lewis and others. -MJ-
