Last Friday evening on Piano Jazz, PRI; the guest said this was his first musical exploration. He played a sample of it and while it sounded familiar, I couldn't place it anywhere. Does anyone have any more information about it ??
Hey Paul:
That was Arturo O'Farrill, pianist, composer and leader of his late father's Afro Cuban Big Band.
It wasn't "sustaining 7ths" but suspended chords he described as using for his early forays into improvisational music. Hostess Marian McPartland asked him what suspended keys he liked and had him play a sample. He said, "D suspended" and proceeded to improvise through something that indeed sounded very familiar - it sounded exactly like Bruce Hornsby.
I love this program and have often wished that BE or Doug Jernigan would be a guest and go mano y mano with Marian. I'm sure she'd dig it.
Sorry for listening so carelessly, Mark. It is one of my favorite shows as well and yes, BE or DJ would make one heck of a show !!
BTW: the offer for a copy of Pushin' Pedals is still yours for the asking. Just e-mail me you snail mail address. That's the least I could do for such a nice welcome to the Forum last year !!
Paul:
Thanks, but I've owned a copy of "Pushin' Pedals" since since I first started playing more than 25 years ago - got it from Tom Bradshaw - and I've re-read over the years. It's a wonderful account of the early days and the development of pedal steel. But if you'll e-mail me your snail mail address, I'll send it and ask you to autograph it.
Best,
Mark
