In Quebec there is a huge market for country music here. During our short summers there are hundreds of festivals all over the place that pay quite well. As far as radio goes, the only country station we get in Montreal is broadcast out of Malone, New York, Your typical Clear Channel top 40 country, which leaves a lot to be desired. There are quite a few clubs that hire country acts, but they tend not to pay well( 50-75 a night), and have more in common with crackhouses than bars. As a family man, with a full time career, I owe it to wife and my children, not to hang out in places like that. I'm of the firm opinion that most decent people don't go to bars anymore, due to DUI laws and the proliferation of drugs, and the riff raff that comes with it. Just my 2 cents!

Country music requires drugs, drunk driving, and riff raff. We owe it to our families not to tell them that we hang out in places like that.

The San Francisco BAy Area is pathetically bad. We are down to one questionable "country" station and very few places to play or hear live country music.

I go up the road about 100 miles to Renfro Valley KY. to hear some good old traditional country. The Barn Dance show , with Greg Jones on steel, my kind of music. Not much country in Knoxville TN. Don't know if they still play country in Nashville or not, haven't heard lately.

Totally off the subject, but I played in a band once that did a song called HELL YES I CHEATED. The groom heard us and hired us to play it...you guessed it...for his wedding.

The real stuff is perhaps a sub-genre even here, but it's a very strong one. Chad and Reggie Rueffer, Jim Snider, Jake Hooker, and Curtis Potter all play here. Johnny Bush and Darrell McCall make forays, too.

Of course, Dicky Overbey, Gary Carpenter, Junior Knight, Tom Morrell, Albert Talley, and Jim Loessberg are around to fill the steel chairs. I would say the bar is quite high for steel players...which makes it a treat for listeners.

I really wish I could beam all you folks in for one of these shows; I can't help but think that many have no idea how good and how country it can be.

And interestingly, many of these venues which cater to real country are actually quite the family atmosphere clubs. Last time I played at Big Balls of Cowtown, a nine year old girl was having her birthday party there. She sat in on fiddle later.

Don't hide from the family...bring 'em!

Here in Southern Ohio we have lots of good little traditional country music shows with killer staff bands. Steel is always present. Great singers, too. If you're ever near McConnelsville Ohio, drop by the Ohio Valley Opry. We seat 560 in a beautiful Opera House, similar to the Ryman on a smaller scale, and the acoustics are terrific. Great family oriented show. Lots of fun and good music.

Here in Nova Scotia there is still quite a bit of country music in the bars, although a lot of the bands have downsized to trios to keep working. There are some old time country festivals where families can get out to hear country music, in Bridgewater NS there is a Hank Snow tribute which is a totally volunteer-run weekend, Hank Snow tunes and old timey bands and a "sonds like Hank" contest.

Actually, the SF Bay Area isn't too bad these days (or my expectations have been lowered Image ). Henflings and the Espresso Garden book "country" acts (does Tom Russell count?). Montalvo sometimes books people like Jimmie Dale Gilmore, SF has little places like the Hotel Utah (a dive where I've caught Dallas Wayne and Big Sandy). Marin has Nicasio (Asleep at the Wheel a while ago, Amazing Rhythm Aces coming up). The east Bay's a bit short on venues these days, but at least you can count on the Freight for bluegrass (come to think of it, there's a LOT of bluegrass around here. Odd.) Merle Haggard is doing a Bob Wills gig at Masonic in SF in November (how's that for advance planning?).

All told, it could be better, but to quote: "it's not bad..."
