Last spring I played on an Adult Alternative CD that's the first release of a startup label. It's doing well in its format on internet radio, but they have been having trouble 'breaking it' on "terrestrial" radio because the owner refused to pay the payola to do that. Well he finally gave up and bought a September's worth of air play from Clear Channel.
Another band that I play and record with is releasing it's latest this month. A few years ago we played a small club that was kind of a 'showcase', down by the sea, and the owner was "Anytime you guys want to play here, you have an open invitation". So the leader called him up to see about another gig and was informed that Clear Channel had bought all of the slots for a year for their bands.
So we have a 'kitty' saved up to try and buy our way onto a local radio station when a slot opens up. I had always hoped and wanted it to be a meritocracy, but then I'm kind of naiive about some things.

There are FCC hearings going on right now about how to deal with Clearchannel and the other 2 guys that control all media in our country. Write your congressman ! Contact the FCC ! It will make a very real difference. My sister is pretty high up in the FCC and the guys in the dept that want to do something about it need all the help they can get.
