I would like to know who decides who is going to be on the televised portion of the Opry? If they have a problem with too many people wanting to attend the Opry, so they show this crap in an effort to keep people away, then they are doing a good job. If I were thinking about attending and saw this show tonight, I would call and cancel my tickets. I have not been to it in a few years, but I still believe it actually has some country music on it, not this whatever it is they show on the TV portion. If I were the host, Ricky Skaggs, tonight, I would have been embarrassed to bring on these acts.

I was on my way down to the Midnight Jamboree,& tuned in to the Opry. I had to double check to see if I was on the right station. Keith Urban was on. His music is good, however, its the FURTHEST thing from country music that I've ever heard! Then,"good ol' boy" Porter Wagoner says its "an honor to have him on the show"! Porter has become so patronizing in his later years, that its sickening. ("Oh,your so talented,& wonderful,& great, etc, etc.")Next thing ya know, they'll be signing Britny Spears as a "regular" on there.

Smiley,
You are soooo right. It seems that very soul of man has been sold out for the marketing dollar. I could not believe the music that I was hearing on the Opry TV show.
I know, I know... these are the "big names" of today... however, record lables have sold out their older audience, the complaint is that older listeners don't purchase enough music. They fail to realize that it is because we do not like the choices they are ramming down our throats.

I just watched the tape.

Two songs, whose original versions had great Steel parts, were performed by the original artists. Both artists chose to not include Steel in their performance.

Hey, being patronizing has been a part of show bidness, at least in country music, for a long, long, time.

It's the hypocrisy of having to publicly love and praise someone you personally or professionally despise backstage. I've seen it thousands of times at all levels of the game.

What is Porter, who knows he's probably got one foot on a banana peel and the other in the unemployment office regarding the Opry, gonna do when introducing a young Opry guest? Is he gonna say, "well folks, this guy's music isn't worth walking across the street for, and if I had to play this stuff I'd probably eat my gun, but here he is..."?

I don't think so. Image

BTW, I don't think Keith's version of country music is anything like what I'd call country music, but he is a really neat guy personally. Bruce Robison introduced him to me one night at the Broken Spoke, and he had no pretensions whatsoever about being a "star." He just said, "hey, my name's Keith." I didn't even know he was a performer, and I thought he was just another guitar picker trying to move to Austin. He seemed really interested in David Murray's Telecaster tone coming off the bandstand.

Yup!

I did not hear the radio portion, so I did not hear Porter, but Ricky said basicly the same praises about Keith on the TV portion. I thought it was way out of character, but I understood it for what it was.

I was happy to hear Keith mention Ray Flacke and especially having Ricky have him play and sing on "Highway 40 Blues!" Great job!
Even ole Gregg liked it!! Image

I think Keith Urban is an awesome guitar player who plays the S--t out of that Telecaster. I first noticed him when he was on TNN with the group Rodeo. On a couple of closeups, it looked like the middle and neck pickups and the toggle switch were missing from his guitar. I didn't however care too much for his doing his hit (For the Grace of God) with just the acoustic guitar. He had a band and should have used them as in my opinion it would have sounded a lot better. As for Steve Azar, I like him too. I really like his video for the song he did called "Waitin' on Joe". It puts the song into perspective. As for Ricky Scaggs, he was awesome as usual except I did think his opening tune was a little too fast for the right effect. I was hoping to hear the Whites by themselves instead of the song they did with Ricky. All in all, I enjoyed the show so I guess I'm in the minority.

It's gettin' old..( the show )

Although many may feel the show is pretty good..I find it hard to believe you can broadcast a 1 hour Nashville Country Music show without a single tune with a Steel Guitar...

Keith Urbans ok..he sings pretty good. and he wrote a few good tunes..He certainly in my view is not a 1 hour show Highlighter...

put him in the pack with a group of guitar slingers and he would not stand out in front of the pack. he's a good player and a rocker at heart...and his performances show him to be a rocker at heart.

The show producers had him sing alone, he probably had nothing to say about it. He did a good job I thought.

Yes his Tele is missing two pickups .

I kinda liked Scaggs opening tune..way out there in meter..He looked like he was gonna drop after the song..he was clearly blistered ! We here in our house love the Whites, always have, too bad they didn't sing alone on the TV portion..I guess they gave all the air time to Keith..

And whats up with Keiths open shirt down to the naval ? My favorite guitar player for all time , Robben Ford , does that too..I don't get it..They look like they are saying.." Don't I look good with an open shirt down to my naval "....

IF I ever play on live TV or the Opry, I may not play well, but I'm gonna dress and look good..

Do the Derailers come to mind here ?

They were on Austin City Limits Sat night, they were really good..God forbid they put them on the Opry...Marty Muse ( I think thats his name ) on a Sho-Bud Pro II , ok, I'm jealous...

tp

Oh yeh..I know some of you are saying , Tony, Your favorite guitar player for all time is Robben Ford ? He's a Blues / Fusion player..You're a Tele' chicken plucker, two opposite worlds..

How can this BE ?

Well in the words of Jerry..

Oh IT BE ....

I have many favorite players, he just happens to be on the top of my list..

and he does play a Tele..

Well, I missed the first showing of the Opry TV segment, but I tuned in for the repeat show at 11:00 and switched back and forth between that and Austin City Limits. There it was Merle Haggard for the first half and the Derailers for the second half. So I mostly stayed with Austin. What a show, and lots of great pedal steel on both sets.

I am in total agreement with Jerry here about the show. It wasn't something that I would really care to pay money to see but this was what was scheduled for this week. You CAN have an hour long show without a steel guitar. People if you don't like what is going on here get off the couch and get a job with a band and quit your griping and bellyaching that is what is wrong today. There are too many bitter people out there that gripe and moan about things but they won't do a single thing about it. I for one had already played my job for that day it was a festival that morning at 10:00am at a festival so I feel have a right to tell you to stop the griping and get out and get a job playing if you don't like what is going on and get steel guitar popular again.

One more thing. It is not the opry that picks what songs that are played it is the artist who does this.

What makes one think we don't have paying gigs ?

These are opinions, not gripes..

Some like flavored coffee..some don't

Some like to see and hear TW on the Opry,
afterall..his Steel is right there on camera..actually there were 3 or 4...

I did my gig Friday Night and worked during the day Sat.

I did not want to gig Sat. night.

This is the internet, this is where we are supposed to just type whats on our mind, that is, if we have one...

It all changes the next day anyway..

Jimmy, Some of us are on the couch because we did steady five and six nighters and our share of road work for 30 plus years. Image
