I guess I've seen the last of the Opry on MY television - I've never heard of GAC and my cable company, Comcast, doesn't list them.

Still, I've whined about the show often enough! It's a case of 'be careful what you wish for'......

My cable system doesn't have GAC, but at least now I won't have to watch CMT at all!

Working on the opry every week with Holly Dunn, I think i can say this seems to be just another atempt to drive the opry in the ground!!!!

Im sure they won't stop till it is off the air totaly, and is just a memorie of years gone past.......I think the the true terrorist are running the Opry........
Before long we won't be able to pick it up on our radios anymore, and Isn't that were it all started? ( Ok im stepping of my soapbox)...
PS... Rumor has it in nashville, they are still trying to turn WSM into talk radio, This comming from a Dj. that works there.
And now im gonna call the cable company to see if i can get GAC... does that stand for

I get GAC. I didn't even know I had it until one night I was surfing and found it on channel #470 on the Dallas/FW area Comcast cable.

The only GAC I ever heard of was in a Sienfeld episode,

There was a guy named Todd Gack where they were making fun of his name...

Seems to me that whoever is in charge of TV revenue and contracts is Asleep at the Wheel..

Like Jim said, this will give me an excuse to not watch CMT at all. No more Katie Cook (The orignal Blonde Joke). CMT was (is) just MTV rehashed over. A video/rock station more concerned with belly buttons than music. CMT is not, and never was country. Its dictated out of New York. Its no great loss if I lose CMT it aint country ANYMORE ANYWAY and hasnt been for quite sometime, the other day I skipped by it and saw Cheryl Crow,Kid Rock,John Cougar Mellanhead or what ever his name is?Hell they play what they call a classic country video and its Shania I must be getting real old or somethin', but I will miss the Oprey thats all I used to look at on CMT anyways...

This is fantastic news Jim, thanks for the heads up.
I rarely watch GAC, the hosts are lame and it's all top 40 garbage, but I'll turn it on for the Opry.

My lady friend told me she was watching GAC recently and they had a steel guitarist on the show demonstrating the in's and out's of the instrument.
Isn't that cool?

Good news to us here in Cincinnati. We get GAC but not CMT. When they moved from TNN (The NASCAR Network) we could no longer get The Opry Live.

Thank goodness for change! Nothing stays the same I've heard said here on the Forum.
Can you envision a Frank Sinatra Show where someone from the otherside of town would come out and explain the day to day life and Frank's rise to stardom for the viewers. She talked to most of us as tho' we were idiots and she wasn't even born when the Opry was at its greatest peak.
No need for me to get upset on Sat. nites
any longer.
I'm still trying to acquire a video copy of Mike Snyder's last Sat.Opry performance with the three fiddle swing sounds. What a great show. His 4th part on mandolin really kicked the tunes into orbit. Hmmm. There's something else going on here. The article says that the Opry is CMT's #1 show, and they're letting it go??? Also, with the market down by almost 2/3 on GAC, they certainly won't get the audience that it had on CMT. No, I'm not paranoid, but there's clearly something else going on here. GAC might gain a few points initially, and it seems they're the only ones who might benefit from this change. Will it last? Time will tell. Maybe it's a prelude to Gaylord & Co. getting out of the "Opry business" altogether. One thing is for sure, the Opry tradition won't be hurt if it disappears from TV altogether. I think that the Opry would lean a lot more towards classic country if it went back to being just a radio show. Without the "visual aspect" of a TV, a lot of the newer acts would have no real appeal to the listeners.

Film at 11:00?

Donny..very intesting obvservation..and one I fully agree with..

without the visual TV segment the newer acts will suffer..Keith, Toby, Kenny...etc..they can't be thinking this change is gonna keep their rocket ships fueled...can they ?

Something else is going on but I think it has more to do with GAC offering a bunch of cash for the TV rights..more cash than CMT..

According to the article:

CMT said in a statement yesterday: CMT loves, respects, and supports the great institution of the Grand Ole Opry and its significance in country music. The contract has reached the end of its term. CMT and Gaylord Entertainment negotiated for a new term, but an agreement was not reached.

I see what you're saying, Jim (or rather, what the article said). Still, it doesn't make sense. Since CMT has a subscriber base that's almost 3 times the size of GAC's, and since the Opry's their #1 show, it's only logical that CMT would be in a position to offer far more money (for a contract renewal). At least, that's how I see it.

In addition, CMT's dropping the Opry would signal that they're going to drop other shows with similar (read: "traditional country") programming.
