Shrinking and cracking plastic bindings

I don't know the place for this topic either, but. This deals with the same Gretsch guitar, but I have seen similier on steels of certain periods. The bindings shrink and start to pull and crack usually at corners or curves. I have seen repairs done with super type glues (Hot-stuff, etc), but would like to get some input from those who have tried repairs.
I hade to replace the tuners on my 59 gibson lap steel because some of the plastic buttons had shrunken away from the post. I have read they actually give off heat in the process.

Unfortunately Gretsch guitars from that era are not built to last a lifetime compared to Gibsons. I had a bunch of them and thy all had these problems. Binding shrinkage is a common problem on vintage guitars, many Epiphones suffer from that too but any repair shop should be able to fix that.
But again - this would be not a cheap thing to do!
