So beautiful! When you listen to this , the music transcends the limitations of the instrument and the technique is invisible, for lack of a better word .

I bet you it's been a hot minute since that tune was played at Halekulani.

Alan Akaka, Casey Olson (Hiram's son) or one of the "Byrd's Nest" steelers have probably played that there.

Itβs a rare treat to see steel played even in Waikiki these days.Chris Templeton wrote: 10 Mar 2026 12:08 pm Alan Akaka, Casey Olson (Hiram's son) or one of the "Byrd's Nest" steelers have probably played that there.
Instrumentals are also very rare. If an instrumental is played, itβs most likely a Hawaiian tune.
But Steel is trying to make a comeback, which is encouraging.
Stranger on the Shore is an oldie but goodie. I like that melody. So nostalgic.
Aloha,
Mike K

I can't remember. Here's somebody playing it in C6th, with slants: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4W0U8y3WAM
(Edinga needs a roundness bar for her slants).

Re: Jerry Byrd-"Stranger On The Shore" Live at the Halekulani Hotel, Waikiki 1986
I asked Jerry Byrd about the popularity of steel and he said that it goes in cycles. That was in the mid 80's and the internet hadn't yet put its "alone together" (a Sherry Turkle phrase") stamp on things.
These days, going to most public places, people are staring/fiddleing with their gadgets.

All I'm saying is that it's been a hot minute since "Stranger on the Shore" was last played at Halekulani, which is in all likelihood a probability.
I love playing steel. Thank goodness for this forum. I think there will always be a niche for traditional and folk music and instruments.
Steel is too beautiful of a sound for it to die out. There will always be people in the future that discover it and fall in love with it, which is why the rest of us have to leave breadcrumbs to help them self-direct their learning.
Aloha!
